{"id":604767,"date":"2021-11-26T06:11:08","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T11:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=604767"},"modified":"2021-11-26T07:02:38","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T12:02:38","slug":"gianni-infantino-biennial-world-cup-opposers-afraid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/11\/26\/gianni-infantino-biennial-world-cup-opposers-afraid\/","title":{"rendered":"Gianni Infantino Says Biennial World Cup Opposers Are &#8216;Afraid&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIFA president Gianni Infantino has continued a war of words against those opposing a biennial World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The former UEFA general secretary placed a jab at his former organisation, and the South American federation, by stating they are &#8216;afraid&#8217; of relinquishing power despite the need for reform.<\/p>\n<h2>FIFA President Says Biennial World Cup Opposers Are &#8216;Afraid&#8217;<\/h2>\n<h3>Gianni Infantino&#8217;s jab<\/h3>\n<p>Infantino called out UEFA and COMNEBOL whilst speaking at the Confederation of African Nations congress held in Cairo. At the event, the African countries officially supported FIFA&#8217;s proposal of a World Cup every two years on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/sports\/infantino-says-those-opposed-world-cup-change-scared-2021-11-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIFA president told the congress<\/a>: \u201cThose who are against it are those at the top. It happens in every sector of life when there are reforms and changes, those who are at the top don&#8217;t want anything to change because they are at the top.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cAnd they are afraid maybe that if something changes, their leadership position is at risk. We understand that and we complement and applaud them for <em>having<\/em> been so successful in reaching the top. This is fantastic, and they are an example for everyone.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cBut at the same time, we cannot close the door, we need to keep the door open, we need to give hope and opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">He added: \u201cWe need to offer more chances for world football, for African football to shine at the world stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The World Cup plans<\/h3>\n<p>FIFA&#8217;s plans, suggested by Saudi Arabia and fronted by Arsene Wenger, simply transform the football schedule from 2024. A World Cup will be held every two years, with the likelihood that continental competitions will follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying will be completed in October and March while qualifying matches will be cut from ten to six. Wenger advocates that at least 25 days of compulsory rest will also be introduced. The campaign idea is to have more &#8216;meaningful&#8217; international matches.<\/p>\n<h3>The opposition<\/h3>\n<p>Infantino&#8217;s and Wenger&#8217;s drive to push through the proposals has been met with stiff resistance.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA fears the plans, if implemented, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/uefa-president-aleksander-ceferin-europe-and-south-america-prepared-to-boycott-biennial-world-cup-bj3jzmzgh\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;kill&#8217; player health<\/a> and on the balance of club and international football at all levels. Worries about the health of the players have grown. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/10\/09\/fifpro-seeking-player-protection-reforms\/\" target=\"_self\">FIFPro&#8217;s report showed the damning impact<\/a> of a tight schedule, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/10\/10\/thibaut-courtois-criticises-uefa-nations-league-third-place-play-off\/\" target=\"_self\">Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois publicly lambasted UEFA<\/a> for not caring what the players think and feel.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CONMEBOL is united with their European counterparts, stating it &#8220;turns its back on almost 100 years of world football tradition&#8221;. Both UEFA and CONMEBOL have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2021\/sep\/09\/uefa-ceferin-threatens-world-cup-boycott-as-sebastian-coe-joins-chorus-of-disapproval\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatened to boycott<\/a> the competition if it were introduced.<\/p>\n<p>Another international body, the International Olympic Committee, has fallen in line with the opposition as they are agitated for how it can impact other sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can see no good reason for it,\u201d Sebastian Coe told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2021\/sep\/09\/uefa-ceferin-threatens-world-cup-boycott-as-sebastian-coe-joins-chorus-of-disapproval\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThere may be vested interests here but the summer sports are protective about the landscape as it\u2019s hard enough for them as it is to grab space in the traditional or digital media.
