Former Newcastle United<\/a>, West Ham United<\/a> and England midfielder Kieron Dyer will undergo a liver transplant after managing problems with his liver for a few years.<\/p>\n

The 42-year-old, who is in charge of Ipswich Town’s U23 side, has been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare condition that if left untreated, can lead to liver failure and can even be fatal.<\/p>\n

About the Diagnosis<\/h3>\n

Dyer spoke in a statement released by Ipswich Town on Sunday: <\/a>“Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a condition of the liver a couple of years ago, that would lead to me one day needing a transplant.<\/p>\n

“Over the next week, test results will confirm when I need to go through this procedure.”<\/p>\n

Dyer also said that he sees himself “as a positive person that will overcome this minor setback.”<\/p>\n

“I would like to ask everyone now to respect my privacy and my family’s privacy.”<\/p>\n

“I’m very grateful to the club, the supporters and the general public for their messages of support over the past week.”<\/p>\n

Ipswich Town have also released a statement about the situation: “Kieron has been managing problems with his liver for the past couple of years, and now requires a transplant.<\/p>\n

“The best wishes of everyone at Ipswich Town Football Club remain with Kieron and his family.”<\/p>\n

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins<\/h3>\n

Last month, Dyer took part in the Channel 4 series, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, but withdrew for medical reasons.<\/p>\n

This happened while the celebrities were wrestling as a challenge, with Dyer cracking his rib in a fight with another contestant.<\/p>\n

When the accident happened, Dyer said he “just couldn\u2019t breathe”, his cracked rib turned into a collapsed lung.<\/p>\n

The dad of two struggled to take a breath, likening the pain to that of being strangled or drowning.<\/p>\n

Dyer’s Playing Days<\/h3>\n

Dyer was born and raised in Ipswich, where he started playing football for Ipswich Town at 17-years-old<\/p>\n

Dyer went on to make almost 100 appearances for the club before signing for Newcastle United for \u00a36 million – Ipswich’s club record fee at the time.<\/p>\n

Over the course of eight years with the Magpies, Dyer made 250 appearances.<\/p>\n

Possibly his most notable achievement was his involvement in the 2002\/03 PFA Team of the Year, with Dyer earning a spot on a team that included Alan Shearer<\/a>, Thierry Henry<\/a> and Paul Scholes.<\/p>\n

After his eight years at Newcastle, Dyer joined West Ham, again for a sum of \u00a36 million. Dyer spent four years with The Hammers, but only made 35 appearances due to injuries.<\/p>\n

in the 2010\/11 season, Dyer returned to his boyhood club, spending one season at Ipswich Town. He then finished his playing career with a season-long stint at Queens Park Rangers and finishing at Middlesbrough.<\/p>\n
