{"id":603868,"date":"2021-10-31T15:00:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-31T19:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=603868"},"modified":"2026-06-05T21:49:47","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T01:49:47","slug":"kieron-dyer-liver-transplant-rare-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/10\/31\/kieron-dyer-liver-transplant-rare-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Kieron Dyer to Undergo Liver Transplant Following Diagnosis of Rare Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/10\/27\/lucien-favre-favourite-newcastle-united\/\" target=\"_self\">Newcastle United<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/10\/29\/daniel-kretinsky-west-ham-united\/\" target=\"_self\">West Ham United<\/a> and England midfielder Kieron Dyer will undergo a liver transplant after managing problems with his liver for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old, who is in charge of Ipswich Town&#8217;s U23 side, has been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare condition that if left untreated, can lead to liver failure and can even be fatal.<\/p>\n<h2>Kieron Dyer to Undergo a Liver Transplant After Being Diagnosed With Rare Disease<\/h2>\n<h3>About the Diagnosis<\/h3>\n<p>Dyer spoke in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itfc.co.uk\/news\/2021\/october\/club-statement--kieron-dyer2\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement released by Ipswich Town on Sunday: <\/a>&#8220;Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a condition of the liver a couple of years ago, that would lead to me one day needing a transplant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the next week, test results will confirm when I need to go through this procedure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dyer also said that he sees himself &#8220;as a positive person that will overcome this minor setback.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would like to ask everyone now to respect my privacy and my family&#8217;s privacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very grateful to the club, the supporters and the general public for their messages of support over the past week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ipswich Town have also released a statement about the situation: &#8220;Kieron has been managing problems with his liver for the past couple of years, and now requires a transplant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best wishes of everyone at Ipswich Town Football Club remain with Kieron and his family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins<\/h3>\n<p>Last month, Dyer took part in the Channel 4 series, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, but withdrew for medical reasons.<\/p>\n<p>This happened while the celebrities were wrestling as a challenge, with Dyer cracking his rib in a fight with another contestant.<\/p>\n<p>When the accident happened, Dyer said he &#8220;just couldn\u2019t breathe&#8221;, his cracked rib turned into a collapsed lung.<\/p>\n<p>The dad of two struggled to take a breath, likening the pain to that of being strangled or drowning.<\/p>\n<h3>Dyer&#8217;s Playing Days<\/h3>\n<p>Dyer was born and raised in Ipswich, where he started playing football for Ipswich Town at 17-years-old<\/p>\n<p>Dyer went on to make almost 100 appearances for the club before signing for Newcastle United for \u00a36 million &#8211; Ipswich&#8217;s club record fee at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of eight years with the Magpies, Dyer made 250 appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly his most notable achievement was his involvement in the 2002\/03 PFA Team of the Year, with Dyer earning a spot on a team that included <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/10\/returning-players-alan-shearer\/\" target=\"_self\">Alan Shearer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/02\/27\/returning-players-thierry-henry\/\" target=\"_self\">Thierry Henry<\/a> and Paul Scholes.<\/p>\n<p>After his eight years at Newcastle, Dyer joined West Ham, again for a sum of \u00a36 million. Dyer spent four years with The Hammers, but only made 35 appearances due to injuries.<\/p>\n<p>in the 2010\/11 season, Dyer returned to his boyhood club, spending one season at Ipswich Town.
