Bayern Munich<\/a> boss Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for COVID-19, the club has announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Benfica Win Missed<\/h3>\n

Nagelsmann travelled to Benfica<\/a> expecting to take his usual seat on the touchline. He stayed in the team hotel after developing a ‘flu-like infection’, while assistants Dino Toppmoller and Xaver Zembrod oversaw his duties.<\/p>\n

Bayern routinely dispatched their opponents without their head coach in a 4-0 victory in Lisbon on Wednesday night (October 20). Benfica held off the German giants until Leroy Sane<\/a> opened the scoring in the 70th minute.<\/p>\n

Thereafter the floodgates opened. Everton Soares scored an own goal ten minutes later, with two goals coming soon after with Sane providing for<\/span> Robert Lewandowski<\/a> and before doubling his own tally.<\/p>\n

Bayern Statement<\/h3>\n

The club statement on fcbayern.com reads: “Despite being fully vaccinated, Julian Nagelsmann, 34, head coach of FC Bayern Munich, has tested positive for COVID-19. He is returning to Munich separately from the team by air ambulance and will self-isolate at home.”<\/p>\n

Fixtures Nagelsmann Could Miss<\/h3>\n

The German’s illness means he will miss further games for Bayern Munich in the coming days.<\/p>\n

German health protocols require people who have tested positive for the virus and are double vaccinated, to self-isolate until a negative PCR test is provided. If the person does not, isolation ends after 14 days.<\/p>\n

If Nagelsmann’s isolation does not end until the 14 days have expired, and he makes a full recovery, Bayern Munich will be without their head coach for four matches.<\/p>\n

Munich play mid-table Hoffenheim on Saturday, October 23 in Bundesliga as they look to stay top of the table.<\/p>\n

Following on is a Wednesday night (October 27) fixture against Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach in DFB-Pokal and a league match on the weekend after against Union Berlin. The fourth Champions League group stage match against Benfica will be the final match Nagelsmann could miss.<\/p>\n
