{"id":602366,"date":"2021-09-28T14:27:31","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T18:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=602366"},"modified":"2021-09-28T14:27:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T18:27:31","slug":"roger-hunt-liverpool-legend-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/09\/28\/roger-hunt-liverpool-legend-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"Roger Hunt: Liverpool Legend and England World Cup Winner Dies Aged 83"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/09\/26\/liverpool-remain-unbeaten-draw-at-brentford\/\" target=\"_self\">Liverpool<\/a> legend and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/09\/26\/hans-joachim-watzke-claims-jadon-sancho-not-appreciated-enough-england\/\" target=\"_self\">England<\/a> World Cup winner Roger Hunt has passed away at the age of 83 today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunt was Liverpool&#8217;s second highest-goalscorer with 244 league goals for the club during his career, only bettered by Ian Rush&#8217;s 346, no-one has yet scored more league goals for the Merseysiders, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Liverpool Legend Roger Hunt Dies Aged 83<\/h2>\n<h3>Liverpool Issue Statement Over Death of Roger Hunt<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club tweeted a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LFC\/status\/1442810150302240768\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> on their official account sending condolences to the Hunt family after Roger&#8217;s death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It reads: &#8220;We are mourning the passing of legendary former player Roger Hunt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The thoughts of everybody at Liverpool Football Club are with Roger&#8217;s family and friends at this sad and difficult time. Rest in peace, Sir Roger Hunt 1938-2021.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Roger Hunt: A Liverpool Legend<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Hunt was born in 1938 in the area of Golborne, Cheshire on July 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunt signed for The Reds in 1958 and would play for 11 years until his final appearance in a Liverpool jersey in December 1969.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phil Taylor was the man who signed Hunt from non-league Stockton Heath, Bill Shankly retained his services. Hunt was part of the team that made its way out of the old Second Division in 1962. His career span saw him win two league titles in 1964 and 1966, as well as an FA Cup with Liverpool in 1965.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunt was also capped 34 times for England, scoring 18 goals. His debut came in 1962 when Liverpool were still in the second tier, he scored 41 goals in as many games for the Reds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunt scored three goals in helping England get out of their group at the 1966 World Cup finals and became one of Alf Ramsey&#8217;s key players during that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Former Liverpool Players, Staff and Rivals Weigh In on Hunt&#8217;s Passing<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolfc.com\/news\/announcements\/445010-jurgen-klopp-pays-tribute-to-roger-hunt\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told the club websit<\/a>e: &#8220;It&#8217;s really sad news and our thoughts and our love go to his family. <\/span>Unfortunately, it feels too frequent in this moment that we are saying farewell to these giants of our club.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Roger Hunt comes second to no-one in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that much is clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be the goalscoring catalyst of the Shankly team to actually achieve promotion and then go on to win those precious league titles and the FA Cup puts him in a bracket of LFC legends who are responsible for making us the club we are today. Not only that, he was also a World Cup winner in 1966, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am told the Kop christened him &#8216;Sir Roger&#8217; for all his achievements. A goalscorer who never stopped working to help his teammates; I believe he would have fit in well within our current team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;So, it is Sir Roger we will remember, honour and pay tribute to over the coming days.
