Despite the draw, Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League.

Liverpool Remain Unbeaten and Keep Top Spot by a Point

Brentford Hold Liverpool in Epic Encounter

After both teams named weakened sides in the Carabao Cup midweek, it was more familiar line-ups for this Premier League fixture as Liverpool looked to remain the only unbeaten side left in the division. Brentford took the lead through Ethan Pinnock’s first-ever Premier League goal following a well-worked free-kick routine but Diogo Jota nodded home from an exquisite Jordan Henderson cross to level the scores at half-time.

The Reds then took the lead twice in the second half through Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones. The first saw the Egyptian turn home a first-time strike after a wonderful ball in behind from Fabinho. Then, with little over 20 minutes to go, Curtis Jones fired a shot on target. His ferocious strike from the edge of the box beat David Raya via a deflection.

But Vitaly Janelt and substitute Yoane Wissa pegged the visitors back. Janelt managed to nod the ball over the line after a bit of a scramble that saw Brentford hit the bar. Then with just eight minutes to go, Wissa kept his cool in the box. The ball fell to him and he lifted the ball over the diving Alisson to snatch a well-deserved point for the hosts.

Story of Missed Chances for Liverpool

As good as Brentford were, Liverpool will feel they probably should’ve won. It took some inspired stops from David Raya to keep the scores level on two occasions. The first saw the former Blackburn Rovers ‘keeper deny Jota from close range with a superb instinct save. The Portuguese forward was looking to convert the rebound from Curtis Jones’ strike that hit the post.

Sadio Mane found Mohamed Salah in behind to wrap the points up at 3-2. Instead of a trademark first-time strike into the far corner on his left. The Egyptian took a touch and tried to lift the ball over Raya, but unfortunately for his side, the effort was over the bar.

Then, in the dying moments, a dangerous ball across the face of goal looked destined to be tapped home by Roberto Firmino. However, a deflection just before Firmino looked to send the ball goalwards for a heart-breaking own goal. Thankfully for Brentford, Raya somehow managed to stop Liverpool from taking all three points at the death with another top save.

More Records for Mohamed Salah

Although not the result he wanted, Mo Salah broke yet another record in a Liverpool shirt. He became Liverpool’s fastest ever player to 100 goals for a single club, taking him just 151 games to hit the milestone. Sergio Aguero at Manchester City, Harry Kane for Tottenham Hotspur and Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers are the only players to achieve the feat quicker. Goal number 131 in a Liverpool shirt saw Salah climb to tenth on their all-time scorer’s list.

Fastest to 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ @premierleague goals for a single club

124 apps – Alan Shearer
138 apps – Harry Kane
147 apps – Sergio Aguero
151 apps – MOHAMED SALAH
160 apps – Thierry Henry pic.twitter.com/U0hb9GnyT4

— Sky Sports Statto (@SkySportsStatto) September 25, 2021

Liverpool Remain Unbeaten

Overall, it was a frustrating day for the Merseyside team, but Klopp will take positives with the result. Despite areas to improve for his side, the game could have gone either way in the end. An unbelievable watch for the neutrals with both teams feeling they could’ve won it. Liverpool missed their chances while Ivan Toney’s late winner was chalked off for offside.

It’s going to be a big week for Liverpool who travel to Porto in the Champions League before taking on Pep Guardiola and Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will rue missed chances as they took just a point from their encounter with Brentford in a six-goal thriller.
