The Brazilian is expected to play a major role for Roma this season with Spinazzola missing most of the season. Like the Italian, Viña is a good athlete and possesses great pace. He also likes dribbling with the ball and has a good technique.

He is good with the ball and has an array of passes in his arsenal. He is also a sound defender with good tackling skills, but what he will have over Spinazzola is availability. The Brazilian has played 44 or more games during each of the last two seasons. The Italian, on the other hand, has struggled with injuries throughout his career.

The last two seasons have also seen Viña rack up ten goals and 16 assists.

The Meteoric Rise of Matias Viña

It has been a sudden turn of fortunes for the 23-year-old. The Uruguayan made his debut in 2017 but rarely played in the first team. The 2019 Primera Season proved to be the turning point. Viña established himself as a regular in the first-team as Nacional ended arch-rivals Penarol’s two-year grip on the league.

His breakthrough season coincided with his national team debut. The left-back quickly became a regular under Oscar Tabarez. He was an integral part of the Copa America squad that lost to Colombia in the quarter-finals.

The left-back’s impressive performances earned him a move to Brazilian giants Palmeiras. Viña continued his development with the Brazilian side, playing an integral part as Palmeiras won the domestic title and ended a 21-year long wait for the Copa Libertadores. Roma are getting one of the most promising young full-backs in South American football.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Roma have officially completed the transfer of Uruguayan left-back Matias Viña from Palmeiras.
