Liverpool<\/a> striker Taiwo Awoniyi is close to completing a permanent move to Union Berlin, according to Liverpool correspondent for Goal, Neil Jones.<\/a> The striker spent last season on loan<\/a> at the Bundesliga club.<\/p>\n

Striker Impressed on Loan Last Season<\/h3>\n

According to the report, Union Berlin are set to smash their current transfer record and splash \u00a36.5 million on the 23-year-old striker. The current record transfer fee stands at just over \u00a33 million when the club signed Polish left-back Tymoteusz Puchacz<\/a> earlier in the summer.<\/p>\n

The Nigeria international scored five times and added three assists from 22 appearances while on loan at the Stadion An der Alten F\u00f6rsterei last season and caught the eye with a series of impressive displays.<\/p>\n

The forward could have added to his tally but a muscle injury sustained in February ended his campaign early.<\/p>\n

Union enjoyed a stellar campaign last season, with a seventh-placed finish ensuring European football for just the second time in the club’s history, in what was only their second-ever season in the top flight.<\/p>\n

Taiwo Awoniyi Has Spent Three Seasons in Germany<\/h3>\n

Having joined Liverpool in 2015, Awoniyi has spent his entire career away from Anfield on loan. The 23-year-old has enjoyed three seasons in the Bundesliga with Frankfurt and Mainz before Union last season.<\/p>\n

Awoniyi has also turned out for Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen along with Belgium clubs Royal Excel Mouscron (on two occasions) and Gent.<\/p>\n

The striker has also added two goals from just three appearances for the Nigerian national side.<\/p>\n

As reported by Kicker<\/a>, the striker finally gained a work permit for England, leaving a return to Union unlikely. However, Union Berlin director of football Oliver Ruhnert said in June that “nothing is ruled out, but in principle it is anything but likely. However, the striker himself was happy in K\u00f6penick and a permanent move looks to be close, with a medical due to take place.<\/p>\n
