Giorgi Aburjania looks set to become Sunderland\u2019s first summer signing according to reports. The Georgia international will become a free agent this week having decided to leave Spanish side FC Cartagena.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spanish newspaper\u00a0<\/span>Sport Cartagena<\/span><\/a>\u00a0report that the midfielder has accepted a contract offer from\u00a0<\/span>Sunderland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and looks set to join the Black Cats in the coming days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunderland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are set for an overhaul in their next playing staff this summer. Several first-team players were allowed to leave at the end of last season and uncertainty still surrounds those who have been offered new deals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The likes of Chris Maguire, Max Power, and Grant Leadbitter among others were allowed to depart. Aiden McGeady, Luke O\u2019Nien, Denver Hume, and last season\u2019s top scorer\u00a0<\/span>Charlie Wyke<\/span><\/a>\u00a0were offered new deals. The latter, however, looks set to move on with several clubs chasing his signature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is expected to be a busy summer on Wearside with head coach Lee Johnson attempting to build a squad that will finally get Sunderland promoted from League One. Backed by new owner\u00a0<\/span>Kyril Louis-Dreyfus<\/span><\/a>, it is expected that fans will see many new faces arriving during pre-season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It now appears that the first breakthrough has happened with the imminent signing of Georgia international midfielder Giorgi Aburjania.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is Giorgi Aburjania?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

26-year-old central midfielder Aburjania has been capped by his country 37 times and is set to leave current club FC Cartagena in the coming days having rejected a new contract.<\/span><\/p>\n

He began his career in his native Georgia playing for Metalurgi Rustavi, Dila, and Lokomotivi Tbilisi. A spell in Cyprus preceded a move to Spain in 2016. Time at Sevilla, Oviedo and a loan spell at Dutch side FC Twente followed prior to signing for FC Cartagena in January of this year on a short-term deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aburjania’s impressive performances made Cartagena desperate to retain his services; however, it appears that an offer from Sunderland has persuaded the midfielder to move to\u00a0<\/span>England<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Should Aburjania move to Wearside, he will also bring plenty of international experience with him. Capped 37 times, he started in Georgia\u2019s June friendlies. Scoring in a 2-1 win against Romania before suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the\u00a0<\/span>Netherlands<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
