De Paul, who is currently playing at the Copa America with Argentina, has had an impressive 2020/21 season. In a difficult season for Udinese, he contributed nine goals and nine assists. He regularly looked the best player on the pitch and finished the season strongly.

Atletico have just won the La Liga title, but they are still looking to strengthen. A number of fringe players are likely to leave, while Saul Niguez is also reportedly for sale. The Italians, understandably, don’t want to let go of him cheap. He has a contract until 2024, so they are in no hurry. De Paul was heavily linked with Leeds United last summer. He ultimately did not join Bielsa’s side as Leeds did not match the asking price.

AC Milan have had their eyes on him too. Udinese’s sporting director, however, played down the proposed move to Atletico. He said that there is still some distance between their valuation and Atletico’s offer, suggesting this could drag on a little longer. Indeed, he said that negotiations haven’t taken off yet, and noted that a number of other clubs are interested in signing him.

Fabrizio Romano, however, reports that the move to Atletico will likely happen soon. Atletico have met the €35 million demand, and De Paul will soon sign a contract till 2026. This is subject to a medical, which will take place after the Copa America. The comments from Udinese’s sporting director have no bearing on the move. Negotations were started in May, but an agreement has finally been reached now.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Rodrigo de Paul is still set for a move to Atletico Madrid this summer, despite the Udinese director’s statements claiming otherwise.
