They are 11 points behind first-place\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/18\/inter-milan-hit-out-at-city-mayor-in-press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Inter Milan<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, so the\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rossoneri<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;s Scudetto hopes are bleak. In addition, AC Milan fitness problems are seemingly coming to an end &#8211; a concern that has perhaps halted a push for the title in recent weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, their Champions League ambitions are not over. With that being said, it will not be easy as they&#8217;re only one point ahead of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/23\/juventus-serie-a-title-challenge-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Juventus<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, two ahead of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/01\/26\/report-sevilla-finalise-deal-atalantas-papu-gomez\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Atalanta<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and a mere four ahead of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/13\/ac-milan-serie-a-title-napoli\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Napoli<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Milan&#8217;s squad, though, is finally returning to a state of normality and that could be pivotal in what remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AC Milan Fitness Concerns Are Easing \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Injuries and Fitness Concerns Crumbled Scudetto Aspirations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rossoneri\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">dominated the first half of the Serie A season. They were able to withstand player absences due to COVID-19, but a wave of injuries rushed in after that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two of the more noticeable absentees were\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/db092d3b\/Ismael-Bennacer\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ismael Bennacer<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/4cde5509\/Zlatan-Ibrahimovic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zlatan Ibrahimovic<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bennacer dictates Milan&#8217;s midfield. He is the brains in dissecting the defense and controlling the tempo. His partner in the midfield,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/05e19d6a\/Franck-Kessie\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Franck Kessie<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is equally important, but the two complement each other perfectly and Milan succeed when they are together. The Algerian sensation missed a couple of months, and Milan&#8217;s form fell apart. Bennacer was back in the victory versus Parma, and the team&#8217;s midfield was impeccable once again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ibrahimovic&#8217;s importance, of course, can never be understated. Not only is he Milan&#8217;s only consistent goal-scorer, but the physical and spiritual leader of the squad. The team clearly lacked morale with him off the pitch. Ibrahimovic missed just as much time as Bennacer, and unfortunately for Milan, the two injuries occurred around the same time. Milan&#8217;s squad deserves credit for not completely falling apart with these injuries, but Scudetto hopes were clearly lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Regaining Fitness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bennacer is back. Ibrahimovic is back as well, but his status for the next couple of games is questionable due to a straight red card this past weekend. The suspension will be appealed, but\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/afa0d4e0\/Mario-Mandzukic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mario Mandzukic<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is finally fit after barely playing a match since his arrival in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/cd0fa27b\/Hakan-Calhanoglu\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hakan Calhanoglu<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the squad&#8217;s main playmaker, has been back for the last couple of weeks. He missed a solid portion of time as well, and he&#8217;s extremely critical to the attack.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/536cebe5\/Ante-Rebic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ante Rebic<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is also looking better game by game since struggling with injuries early on in the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Captain\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/3ead85f9\/Alessio-Romagnoli\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alessio Romagnoli<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is on pace to return this weekend. His vocal leadership is much needed to finish the season. Right-back\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/2146785a\/Davide-Calabria\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Davide Calabria<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is back to individual workouts as well, meaning his return should come either this weekend or the match after that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If Ibrahimovic&#8217;s suspension is successfully appealed, this weekend may be the first match in months where Milan had the whole squad readily available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Looking Ahead<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Milan will look to boost their morale this weekend with another victory over Genoa. A win puts them in a great position if one of Juventus or Atalanta drops points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Five of the last eight matches are very winnable. In that stretch, however, Milan will face Lazio, Juventus, and Atalanta.
