Next Saturday’s fixtures in the Championship, League One and League Two will be moved to avoid clashing with the funeral of Prince Philip, the EFL announced.<\/p>\n
The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday morning aged 99, just two months before his 100th birthday.<\/p>\n
Breaking tradition, the Prince is to have a ceremonial funeral. State funerals are usually reserved for monarchs, but the duke had said before that he wants no fuss.<\/p>\n
Coronavirus restrictions mean that crowds and attendee numbers are limited – making the duke’s funeral much lower key than had it happened in other times.<\/p>\n
The duke’s coffin will be moved from the private chapel to the State Entrance of Windsor Castle on the day of the funeral. It will be carried on a Land Rover, that the duke designed himself, to St George’s Chapel.<\/p>\n
The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral is due to take place next Saturday (April 17) at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.<\/p>\n
A national minute’s silence at 3 pm will begin the funeral service.<\/p>\n
An EFL spokesperson said: “As a mark of respect, EFL matches scheduled for 3pm on Saturday 17 April will be moved to avoid a clash with the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n
“The EFL will now work with its Clubs to determine at what time the matches will be played, giving consideration to the timing of the service.<\/p>\n
“An announcement will follow in due course.”<\/p>\n
Clubs up and down the football pyramid came together to mark their respects to the duke today (April 10).<\/p>\n
Across the country, clubs stood for a minute’s silence and wore black armbands in memory of the Prince.<\/p>\n
