The past week saw the Black Cats return to League One looks as <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/5be44630\/Lee-Johnson?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Johnson<\/a>&#8216;s side attempted to gain ground on the automatic promotion places. We also look at the latest injury news, Sunderland Ladies, the U23&#8217;s and an unsung hero in goalkeeper <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/1393c5ac\/Lee-Burge?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Burge<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Black Cats Return to League Action Following Wembley Win<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Accrington Stanley: Debut Goal Helps Seal Three Points<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A mere 72 hours following their victory at Wembley in the EFL Cup final, Sunderland travelled to <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/02\/01\/accrington-stanley-sign-adam-phillips-on-loan-from-burnley-while-david-morgan-joins-permanently\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Accrington Stanley<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as they quickly turned their attentions back to League One. Another victory would continue their impressive recent form but more importantly gain ground on the all-important automatic promotion places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A goalless first half had some wondering if it was going to be one of those evenings; however, at half-time\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/12\/14\/lee-johnson-changing-sunderland-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lee Johnson introduced<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0new signing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=18986367,622e6d75&amp;search=Ross+Stewart&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Stewart<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for his debut. The striker signed in January but has been out of action through injury. The big striker immediately began causing Stanley problems and on 62 minutes got his reward as his fine looping header found the back of the net.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With five minutes remaining, main man\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/c205e165\/Charlie-Wyke?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Wyke<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0continued his rich vein of form in front of goal to seal the win. Wyke is currently having the best season of his career. His goal at Accrington made it 27 goals so far for the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nothing Lost or Gained as The Black Cats Return to the Stadium of Light<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Back at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland faced fellow promotion hopefuls\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/02\/25\/michael-appleton-lincoln-city-manager-signs-new-four-year-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lincoln City<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Johnson&#8217;s men beat the Imps 4-0 in December but there would be no repeat. The Black Cats took the lead through full-back <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/b2624d6a\/Callum-McFadzean?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Callum McFadzean<\/a> before half-time but the visitors levelled midway through the second period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prior to the game, Sunderland sat in third place in the table with\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/02\/26\/peterborough-united-reacting-brilliantly-to-last-seasons-disappointment\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Peterborough United<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/14\/oxford-united-derby-win-hull-defeat\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hull City<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> above them. With those both drawing, it was a case of nothing gained on the top two but also nothing lost. This point against a fellow promotion chaser could yet prove vital in the closing stages of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lee Burge: Unsung Hero<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goalkeeper\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2019\/07\/03\/sunderland-lee-burge\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lee Burge<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has become an unsung hero of late for Sunderland. Inconsistent form led to the former <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/10\/coventry-city-return-ricoh-arena\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coventry City<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0shot-stopper being dropped for the away fixture at\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/19\/shrewsbury-town-absence-of-steve-cotterill\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shrewsbury Town<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in early February. Defeat in that game led to Johnson quickly restoring Burge and ever since, his form has been exceptional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seven clean sheets and numerous important saves in his 11 games back have seen Sunderland move up the table and win the EFL Cup. Johnson has been delighted with his keeper of late. Following the Lincoln game, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/sport\/football\/sunderland-afc\/lee-johnson-hails-lee-burge-after-sunderland-goalkeeper-produces-another-excellent-display-3173000\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he said<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: &#8220;Since that Shrewsbury game, when we felt it was the right time to leave him out, he came back in very quickly, and since then I think he\u2019s been top drawer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;As a goalkeeper, it\u2019s really important that your defence trusts you, and I think at the moment, the communication is good and they trust him to make the big saves. Today, he\u2019s had to make a couple of very good ones.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Injury Update: <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/f2c206d4\/Denver-Hume?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Hume<\/a> Closing in on Return<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Full-back Denver Hume returned to training last week following a lengthy layoff due to a hamstring injury. He has not featured since December 5th and his return in the coming weeks will be a boost to the side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Defenders <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/4be70ecf\/Bailey-Wright?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bailey Wright<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/3419ab84\/Tom-Flanagan?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Flanagan<\/a> are still expected to be out for several weeks, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/d2bf42ba\/Jordan-Jones?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Jones<\/a>,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> who has missed the last three games and is also ruled out of Northern Ireland&#8217;s World Cup qualifiers, is expected to be back in training within the next week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Forward <a href=\"https:\/\/fbref.com\/en\/players\/c5cc1b13\/Aiden-OBrien?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aiden O&#8217;Brien<\/a>, who has also missed the last three games, is expected to be the first player to return to training of those currently out of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ladies Announcement<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/09\/25\/sunderland-ladies-looking-to-bounce-back-from-last-seasons-disappointment\/\" target=\"_self\">Sunderland Ladies<\/a> were given bad news last week when it was announced that tiers three to six of the women&#8217;s game would be declared null and void. No promotion or relegation will happen in these leagues this season. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The lady Black Cats are currently playing in the third tier of the women&#8217;s game in England. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A statement from Sunderland ladies on <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/safc.com\/news\/ladies-news\/2021\/march\/season-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">safc.com<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0read: &#8220;SAFC Ladies would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the supporters around the world who have been truly outstanding throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we will strive to keep fans in the loop with further news and information about the finalised decision as we receive it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">U23&#8217;s Latest: Young Black Cats Return With Three Points<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sunderland&#8217;s U23 side earned a huge win away at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/02\/23\/crystal-palace-beating-your-rivals\/\" target=\"_self\">Crystal Palace<\/a>. Their 2-1 victory has lifted them above rivals <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/03\/21\/brighton-hove-albion-victory-against-newcastle\/\" target=\"_self\">Newcastle United<\/a> as they battle to avoid ending the season bottom of the table. Sunderland looked to be heading for defeat as they fell behind in the second half and then conceded a penalty. However, the penalty was saved and the Black Cats soon equalised.
