Manchester United<\/a> striker Edinson Cavani<\/a> is eyeing a move back to South America this summer, according to his father, Luis.<\/p>\n

Cavani Planning to Leave in June<\/h3>\n

The revelation comes amid speculation<\/a> that United were set to offer its number seven a contract extension. Luis Cavani’s revelations would suggest any approach is set to be rejected.<\/p>\n

The striker’s father spoke to Ol\u00e9<\/a> about his son’s future, saying: “Today he does not feel comfortable in England. There are things that sometimes bother the human being, the person,\u00a0the issue of the penalty for the ‘negrito’ bothered him<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“That has been affecting him, sometimes the player does not find his level, those things can mark you. Sometimes your head leads you to deteriorate. He has a clause in the contract that allows him to leave in June.”<\/p>\n

Cavani has been at Old Trafford since the beginning of the season but has failed to start consistently for the Red Devils due to many reasons, including a delayed arrival due to COVID-19, the suspension his father cited, and injuries.<\/p>\n

Although this announcement from the 34-year-old’s father comes as a surprise, he has already been planning an exit to South America, Luis Cavani revealed, saying: “I cannot deny that he wants to play in Boca [Juniors], we have talked about it and he even made it public, and he has had many conversations with Riquelme.<\/p>\n

“Knowing Edi, because of what he has spoken with Riquelme, he leans a lot for Boca.”<\/p>\n

United Need to Fast-Track Striker Hunt<\/h3>\n

With this news, it will be absolutely clear to the Manchester United board that the club will be left short of an out-and-out striker by the summer.<\/p>\n

Although Cavani has not been a mainstay in the United side, he has offered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new dimension and highlighted the lack of a centre-forward in the team.<\/p>\n

Cavani has been hugely influential in moments this season, including United’s comeback at Southampton<\/a> in November, and his stunning goal<\/a> late on against Everton<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n

While being unable to establish himself as one of United’s best players, he has offered a glimpse of how much the Red Devils can improve with an established centre forward in the squad.<\/p>\n

He has shown intelligence in the box with predatory runs and positioning that United does not have available to them through the likes of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, or Marcus Rashford.<\/p>\n

Despite Martial’s recent exceptional performance in the Manchester Derby<\/a>, he has failed to convince United fans that he can consistently perform as the team’s focal point throughout a season.<\/p>\n

This leaves the club with little option but to search Europe for a new striker of Cavani’s profile to fill the gap he will leave in the squad.<\/p>\n

With the striker’s short-term deal and age, it seems unlikely that the club was not already considering a signing in this area this summer. Now with Luis Cavani’s announcement, it is clear the club has to act.<\/p>\n

Replacing the Uruguayan with another ageing striker makes little sense – the board needs to look at budding talent across Europe to lead their line for many years, and they need to make their move in the coming months.<\/p>\n
