Moore is the permanent replacement for Tony Pulis who was sacked in December following one win in his ten league games in charge.

Neil Thompson had been in caretaker charge and did see an improvement in results. He guided West Bromwich Albion into the league’s top six but was surprisingly sacked a few games before the play-offs.

Perceived as harsh, Moore wasn’t out of football for long. He took the reigns at Doncaster Rovers in July 2019 and has built an exciting, young team who pride themselves on attacking football.

Moore brings a wealth of experience but faces his toughest challenge in management. He inherits a Sheffield Wednesday side in deep trouble near the bottom of the Championship.

Wednesday are 23rd in the table and six points adrift of safety. Their season has been hugely disappointing with the Owls now on their third permanent manager of the season.

Following Tony Pulis’ sacking in December, Neil Thompson had been in charge of the first team. His spell started well with four wins from his first five league games in charge. However, five defeats from the last six including four straight losses have concerned Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Moore arrives ready for the challenge ahead. He takes charge with immediate effect with his first game coming against fellow strugglers Rotherham United on Wednesday, a crucial fixture for both sides as they battle for their lives. Each of the two teams head into the game in rotten form. Wednesday have lost their last four, while Rotherham have earned no points from their previous five matches. Something has to give at the New York Stadium.

Andy Butler Confirmed as Darren Moore’s Replacement at Doncaster Rovers

Following Darren Moore’s surprise departure, Doncaster have confirmed player/coach Andy Butler will take charge of the first team for the rest of the season.

Butler is tasked with maintaining Doncaster’s promotion bid as well as halting their recent slump in form. Rovers have lost four of their last five league games having won five consecutive matches previous to that.

Speaking to the club’s website about Butler’s appointment, chairman David Blunt said: “We are disappointed that Darren has chosen to leave the club part way through what has been a season full of promise.

“We have made significant efforts to support Darren over the past 18-months and ensure he was able to build a team capable of challenging in the top six. This has included supporting him through the past two transfer windows despite the difficult financial circumstances.

“Our ambitions remain to achieve a top-six finish and we hope and expect that Andy will use this time to put himself in the prime position to secure the role on a permanent basis at the end of the season. Andy’s first priority will be to halt the team’s recent run of poor form and put our season back on track.”

Butler’s first game in charge is against promotion rivals Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium. A crucial clash for both sides’ promotion ambitions. Doncaster can cement their top-six place as well as moving level on points with their opponents if they secure the three points.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Darren Moore as their new manager.
