However, the club elected to place all non-urgent contract renewals on hold – including those of Son and striker Harry Kane – amid financial uncertainties caused by COVID-19.

But despite the hold-up, Mourinho is confident the club will strike a deal with the 28-year-old when a more stable financial picture emerges.

Speaking after Spurs’ 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion, Mourinho said: “Son is not a problem, he has a contract still for a couple of years if I am not wrong, maybe even three. I believe, just to wait for the right moment to do it.

“Probably this situation with the world where we are, the covid situation, I do not think it is the right moment for players and clubs to discuss contracts with so many people losing jobs and not working and difficulties.

“I believe that when the sun shines again for the world, I believe the club and Sonny they are going to arrive quite easily to a conclusion.”

Son Setting the Bar for Other Spurs Attackers

Son’s electrifying form this season has placed him straight in contention for a bumper new deal at Spurs. The winger has netted 17 goals in all competitions, 13 of which have come in the Premier League.

The South Korean has also formed one of the world’s most deadly attacking partnerships – flanking Spurs talisman Kane. The pair have scored 26 of Spurs’ 36 goals in the Premier League and have combined for a record-equalling 13 goals so far this season.

But Son’s performances have set the bar for the club’s other wide men, who have struggled to hit similar heights.

The eagerly-anticipated return of Gareth Bale on loan from Real Madrid has mostly been met with disappointment. The Welshman has endured yet another injury-hit campaign which has prevented him from developing any kind of form.

Steven Bergwijn has yet to net for Spurs this season, despite a number of promising performances since joining the club midway through last season. The Dutchman’s attacking figures will prove to be disappointing, but has found himself to be a useful defensive asset when tracking back in Mourinho’s system.

Lucas Moura has started just five Premier League games with a solitary goal to his name, while dogged Argentine forward Erik Lamela has endured another choppy campaign due to injury.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Jose Mourinho is confident Tottenham Hotspur will agree a new contract with star forward Son Heung-min, but insists the club is waiting for the right time to resume negotiations.
