Charlton Athletic<\/a> have signed Arsenal<\/a> midfielder Matt Smith<\/a> on loan for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

Smith spent the first half of the season at Swindon Town,<\/a> but was recalled by the Gunners and immediately loaned to the Addicks.<\/p>\n

The midfielder is Charlton\u2019s fourth addition in this transfer window.<\/p>\n

24 League One Appearances to His Name This Season<\/h3>\n

The talented 20-year-old is highly thought off in the Arsenal academy. Despite being left out in recent matches, Smith enjoyed a fairly productive loan spell at Swindon Town.<\/p>\n

He made 24 appearances in League One for the Robins, scoring twice and assisting three goals. A move to Charlton offers a fresh challenge as he moves from a relegation battle to a promotion one.<\/p>\n

He is a dynamic midfielder who loves to get on the ball and run at defenders. His creativity is needed in a Charlton side which struggle to score consistently.<\/p>\n

Smith is eligible to make his debut in Charlton\u2019s crucial clash with Portsmouth<\/a> tomorrow evening, in what is a big game for both in the promotion battle.<\/p>\n

Lee Bowyer Pleased With Latest Addition<\/h3>\n

Speaking to the Charlton Athletic website<\/a> about his new signing, manager Lee Bowyer said: \u201cI think he suits the way we play, he\u2019s an energetic midfielder. I like that he looks to play forward every time he receives the ball, he\u2019s going to be another good addition to our squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know with players we\u2019ve had previously from Arsenal, they are all good and comfortable on the ball and importantly he has played men\u2019s football before so he should hit the ground running.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director of Football Steve Gallen added: \u201cHe\u2019s done well at Swindon, we\u2019ve followed him over the last few months and he came available late and we were in a position to sign him, so I\u2019m pleased we\u2019ve been able to get it done.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a good footballer technically, especially with his through passes and reverse passes \u2013 he\u2019s a clever player. He\u2019s good at receiving on the half turn, trying to play forward, so he\u2019ll complement our team and the way we play. Players like Ronnie Schwartz and Conor Washington should benefit from the passes that he brings.\u201d<\/p>\n
