West Bromwich Albion<\/a> have reported a racist message sent to midfielder Romaine Sawyers<\/a>. The club have confirmed an abhorrent message sent to the midfielder has been reported to West Midlands Police.<\/p>\n

The message was sent to the midfielder following Tuesday\u2019s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sawyers Subject of Abhorrent Abuse Following Recent League Defeat<\/h3>\n

The midfielder endured a difficult night against in-form Manchester City on Tuesday evening and was sent a message containing racial undertones following that defeat.<\/p>\n

West Bromwich Albion have condemned the message sent to the midfielder and reported it to the police.<\/p>\n

A statement on the club\u2019s website<\/a> read: \u201cWest Bromwich Albion has today contacted West Midlands Police to report a racist message sent to Romaine Sawyers on social media.<\/p>\n

Everyone at the club is appalled by the abhorrent message which was sent during Tuesday\u2019s Premier League fixture against Manchester City.<\/p>\n

The club has a proud history of confronting all forms of discrimination and will assist the authorities with their inquiries, seeking the toughest available legal punishment, as well as a lifetime ban from The Hawthorns for the individual responsible.<\/p>\n

Albion will offer Romaine the relevant support required at this time and continues with its long-standing commitment to help rid football of racism.<\/p>\n

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters Condemns Recent Cases of Online Abuse<\/h3>\n

Sawyers becomes the latest victim of racial abuse online. He joins Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial in reporting his abuse to their club. Tuanzebe and Martial were subjects of abusive messages<\/a> sent to their social media accounts following Manchester United’s<\/a> defeat to Sheffield United<\/a> on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Premier League have condemned the recent cases of online abuse and reiterated their desire for change in football.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on the Premier League\u2019s website<\/a>, chief executive Richard Masters said: \u201cI am appalled to see the racial abuse received by players this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cRacist behaviour of any form is unacceptable and nobody should have to deal with it. Tackling online hate is a priority for football, and I believe social media companies need to do more.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at the Premier League will continue to support players, managers and their families who receive discriminatory online abuse. Through our central reporting system we have been able to take immediate action on cases like this and we investigate every report received, with legal action taken where possible.<\/p>\n

We are in regular dialogue with social media companies, challenging them to do more against discriminatory abuse on their platforms. We want to see swifter removal of offensive messages and improved identification and banning of offenders.\u201d<\/p>\n
