Former Newcastle United<\/a> goalkeeper Rob Elliot has joined Watford<\/a>. The 34-year-old, as confirmed by the club<\/a>, signs for the Hornets until the end of the season.<\/p>\n

Elliot Will Provide Depth<\/h3>\n

The signing of Elliot comes not long after Ben Foster<\/a>‘s finger injury. The Hornets’ number one is sidelined for the next few weeks, meaning Daniel Bachmann<\/a> has been the starter. The 26-year-old Austrian has impressed so far, only conceding once in his first three league starts – picking up nine points in the process.<\/p>\n

Regardless of Bachmann’s form, the hierarchy felt a reinforcement was needed. Behind Bachmann, the Hornets have 21-year-old Adam Parkes<\/a>. The former Southampton<\/a> youth player is yet to play in a senior match in his career. And behind Parkes, the Hornets have to look to their academy for depth.<\/p>\n

If Bachmann were to miss out with an injury, Watford<\/a> would be left in a troubling situation. Now, following the signature of Elliot<\/a>, the Hornets still have a strong, experienced, reliable backup. An absence for Bachmann no longer spells trouble.<\/p>\n

Outlook For Rob Elliot<\/h3>\n

When Foster returns, Elliot is certain to be relegated to third-choice keeper. Nonetheless, the Hornets’ signature of Elliot was necessary and justifiable. The former Republic of Ireland international will make the Hornets’ match-day trip every week, even when Foster returns, while he will be on the bench for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

The battle between Bachmann and Foster for the Hornets’ number one spot will ignite when Foster returns. So, Elliot is accepting of the fact he will not be in starting contention bar a surprising turn of events.<\/p>\n

Regardless, having Elliot at training will provide great mentorship for the younger players, such as Parkes.\u00a0Once his contract expires in the summer, Elliot will consider retirement if another club does not come knocking quickly. But for now, Elliot will be content to be the Hornets’ backup. Watford are pleased to know their season is not thrown into serious jeopardy if Bachmann has to miss a match or two.<\/p>\n
