Stoke City<\/a> are expecting to secure a permanent deal for Charlton Athletic’s Alfie Doughty<\/a>, according to Richard Cawley of the South London Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old has been the subject of higher tier interest since The Addicks were relegated from the Championship last season.<\/p>\n

Since the summer, Doughty has become a highly sought-after left-sided player and a move away from The Valley has been on the cards for a while. Luton Town and Celtic both submitted bids for the talented 21-year-old earlier in the season, according to Herald Scotland, with the former eventually opting for Rhys Norrington-Davies,<\/a>\u00a0a player that has since joined<\/a> The Potters.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Championship, both AFC Bournemouth<\/a> and Queens Park Rangers expressed an interest in Doughty, but it seems like The Potters are in pole position to secure a deal with the highly-rated left-sided man.<\/p>\n

Doughty Still Facing a Lengthy Spell Away From the Pitch and Where He Will Fit at Stoke<\/h3>\n

Alfie Doughty will not be ready for action, if signed in the coming days, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since late October<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old is certainly deemed a long-term option, with Rhys Norrington-Davies currently occupying Doughty’s left-back position. However, the Welshman is expected to return to Sheffield United<\/a> at the end of the season to fight for a place in Chris Wilder’s starting lineup.<\/p>\n

Despite progressing through the ranks at Charlton as a left-back, Lee Bowyer<\/a> has also frequently played the 21-year-old on the left side of midfield. His versatility will suit Stoke boss Michael O’Neill, who has often opted to use wing-backs this season, a system that is likely to benefit Doughty, who is usually a very attack-minded full-back.<\/p>\n
