According to Sam Wallace of The Telegraph,<\/a> former Liverpool<\/a> striker Danny Ings<\/a> is holding off on signing a new Southampton<\/a> contract as he seeks a Champions League<\/a> return.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Saints striker netted 25 times in 45 appearances last season and has followed that up with seven in 14 this campaign. He has more than proved his capabilities under Ralph Hasenuttl at Southampton and, now- as per Sam Wallace- wants to prove them at the very top.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When at Liverpool, Ings’ luck never seemed to change. As soon as Jurgen Klopp arrived, the 28-year-old was struck by a long-term injury- something that soon became a theme of his Anfield career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So off he went to Southampton- seeking the game time necessary to showcase his talents. And that he has. The former Burnley<\/a> man has gone from an injury-prone forward to potentially securing a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Saints, he has excelled, and perhaps that is the best route into European football for him. Hasenhuttl’s side currently sit ninth- just five points away from the top four having defeated the Premier League<\/a> champions in Liverpool this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With Southampton reportedly<\/a> willing to make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, too, a St Maries stay could yet be on the cards, especially if they continue their rise up the league table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ings Capable of Playing at the Very Top<\/span><\/h3>\n

At 28, Danny Ings may feel as though his prime is nearing its end, especially when considering previous injury issues. For that reason, whilst he is on top of his game and performing consistently, he may believe that now is the best time to make a move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This summer will see Ings’ Saints deal reach its final year if an extension is not agreed- making for an interesting next two transfer windows ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
