Following their 2-2 draw at home to Wolfsburg, Union Berlin<\/a> manager Urs Fischer has praised the performance of his side. Despite falling behind after just ten minutes, Union levelled and took the lead just after the restart, but were pegged back through a second-half penalty.<\/p>\n

Performance Pleases Union Berlin Manager Urs Fischer After Draw Against Wolfsburg<\/h2>\n

Union Berlin Unbeaten in 2021<\/h3>\n

Following a 2-0 win on the road at Werder Bremen,<\/a> Union are unbeaten from their opening two Bundesliga<\/a> games of 2021. Fischer’s side, who are now unbeaten in five league games, have made a blistering start to the new campaign and have suffered just two league defeats all season.<\/p>\n

As a result, Die Eisernen<\/em> find themselves occupying a European spot in the division in fifth place, just three points behind Borussia Dortmund.<\/p>\n

The game against Wolfsburg was the first at the Stadion An der Alten F\u00f6rsterei of the new year. Union fell behind to a Renato Steffen<\/a> header after ten minutes but levelled through Sheraldo Becker<\/a> with his third attempt on goal in an exciting opening half an hour.<\/p>\n

Maximilian Arnold<\/a> was then dismissed for the visitors after bringing down Taiwo Awoniyi<\/a> in the box, but VAR ruled it as a free-kick. It didn’t matter as the returning Robert Andrich<\/a> netted from the resulting set-piece.<\/p>\n

But Wout Weghorst<\/a> equalised after Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty as both teams shared the spoils in Berlin. Wolfsburg are level with Union on 25 but sit behind on goal difference.<\/p>\n

Fischer Reaction<\/h3>\n

Speaking to reporters after the game<\/a>, Fischer was satisfied with his side’s performance. He said:\u00a0\u201cThe team played a very good game.<\/p>\n

“You have this big chance right at the start, but you don’t take the lead.\u00a0Then Wolfsburg takes the lead – that could have been a crack.\u00a0But the opposite was the case.\u00a0I found the reaction to be very good, very adult.\u00a0We’re doing a certain development.”<\/p>\n

He was then asked about his sides points tally and goals for the rest of the season. “I never did the calculation of how many points you need to stay in the league, whether it’s 35, 36 or 32,” he added.<\/p>\n

“And the team has the same attitude.\u00a0Game after game, get as many points as possible.\u00a0But it is crucial that it is mathematically no longer possible to descend.\u00a0Then we see what is still possible.\u00a0And then we want to get as many points as possible.”<\/p>\n

Max Kruse Update<\/h3>\n

Union have been without their summer signing Max Kruse<\/a> since the Berlin derby defeat at the start of December. The 32-year-old had netted six goals and added five assists from ten Bundesliga outings before picking up the injury.<\/p>\n

When asked about Kruse, Fischer said: “He’s still a long way away.\u00a0I’m a little careful about that.\u00a0Because if you have the feeling that you are on the right track, something often comes up and it is usually delayed for weeks. ”<\/p>\n
