After games in the Premier League<\/a> and EFL<\/a> faced suspension due to positive COVID-19 tests, the Women’s Super League has been hit with a similar fate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Positive cases of the virus within the Manchester City<\/a> squad has forced the cancellation of their game against West Ham United.<\/a> Similarly, a positive case within the Arsenal<\/a> squad has forced the postponement of the game between themselves and Aston Villa<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

COVID-19 Cases Forces Postponement of WSL Games<\/span><\/h2>\n

Statement From Women’s Super League<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Women’s Super League has since released a statement which said the following<\/a>: “We can confirm that the Barclays FA Women\u2019s Super League matches between Aston Villa and Arsenal and Manchester City v West Ham United, both due to be played on Saturday 9 January, have now been postponed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“Manchester City provided evidence that outlined they would not be able to meet the minimum squad quota of 14 for their match due to positive COVID-19 tests and other mitigating circumstances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The players affected are now in self-isolation and we will look to reschedule their fixture with West Ham.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“Arsenal also demonstrated that they would not be able to meet the minimum number of 14 players for their match with Aston Villa after the club was affected by COVID-19. As a result, a number of players are in a period of self-isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“With the health of players and staff the priority, the FA has decided that these matches will now be rescheduled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“We wish those with COVID-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will make further announcements in due course on the rearranged fixtures.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The news deals the league a blow heading into the next round of Women’s Super League fixtures as Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and West Ham will now be left with at least one game in hand due to the postponements because of COVID-19 as we approach the halfway point.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
