Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> have put contract talks with two of their star players on hold, according to the Evening Standard’s<\/a> Dan Kilpatrick. Negotiations with Son Heung-min<\/a> have been ongoing for months now, while reports of talks with Harry Kane over a new deal surfaced last night.<\/p>\n

Given the financial pressure Spurs are operating with owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, though, these non-urgent talks are said to have been put to the side and will be re-addressed when finances are less of an issue.<\/p>\n

Star Players Keen to Stay<\/h3>\n

There have been reports of talks with Son over a new deal since at least October, with Jose Mourinho stating then that he expected a resolution “sooner or later”. However, any new deal for the South Korean would take him into the top earners at the club, receiving around \u00a3200,000-a-week, which is high even without the current financial restrictions.<\/p>\n

Talks with Kane are supposedly less advanced. The Independent’s<\/a> Miguel Delaney says that the two parties have opened “initial dialogue” over a new contract at the club, but any agreement is still far off.<\/p>\n

The striker has recently been linked with moves<\/a> away from Spurs, including to Premier League rivals Manchester City<\/a>, so Spurs opening up the possibility of a new deal with the England captain makes sense.<\/p>\n

However, the pandemic is proving a difficult obstacle for Spurs, and when asked about Son’s new contract last month, Mourinho responded: “How can you sign a new contract with a player? You don’t know what is going to happen next season.<\/p>\n

“You don’t know if you can offer the player a better contract than they have now. It’s a very strange moment. I just trust Sonny and Daniel Levy.”<\/p>\n

Tying down both Son and Kane would be the ideal scenario for Spurs, but both are considered to be non-urgent at the moment. The pair signed five-year and six-year deals respectively back in 2018.<\/p>\n

A more pressing issue would be the contract of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, which expires in 18 months. However, there have been no negotiations with the Frenchman amid links<\/a> to Paris Saint-Germain<\/a>, where he would reunite with Mauricio Pochettino.<\/p>\n
