This week&#8217;s Sunderland round-up looks at the Covid-19 outbreak which forced the club to cancel their next three games but not before some controversy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2019\/12\/12\/report-aiden-mcgeady-told-he-can-leave-sunderland\/\" target=\"_self\">Aiden McGeady<\/a>, back in the first team following the departure of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/11\/29\/manager-phil-parkinson-sacked-by-sunderland\/\" target=\"_self\">Phil Parkinson<\/a>, has had his say on what happened between him and his former manager; and as usual, there\u2019s been more takeover talk, but little appears to be progressing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sunderland Round-Up<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Covid-19 Outbreak and AFC Wimbledon Game<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Last Tuesday, just hours before the Black Cats were to host <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/10\/29\/afc-wimbledon-home-sweet-home\/\" target=\"_self\">AFC Wimbledon<\/a> in a league fixture, a Covid-19 outbreak hit the Sunderland squad. It meant that should the game go ahead, head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/12\/16\/lee-johnson-furious-sunderland-game-went-ahead\/\" target=\"_self\">Lee Johnson<\/a> would be without eight first-team players.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/12\/14\/lee-johnson-changing-sunderland-better\/\" target=\"_self\">Sunderland<\/a> requested that the game be called off; however, an agreement between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safc.com\/news\/club-news\/2020\/december\/club-statement-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">club and the EFL<\/a> could not be reached. The club advised that there was a lack of clarity over potential sanctions Sunderland could face in the event that the fixture was unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>The match went ahead with the game ending 1-1. Due to the number of players missing that would normally be in the first team, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/12\/11\/new-sunderland-head-coach-lee-johnson-wants-a-brave-new-sunderland\/\" target=\"_self\">Lee Johnson<\/a> had to call upon players who were either not fully fit, youngsters and those that had played for the Under-23 side just 24 hours prior.<\/p>\n<p>The situation left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/sport\/football\/sunderland-afc\/everything-lee-johnson-said-sunderlands-covid-19-outbreak-he-hits-out-efl-lack-clarity-3069569\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Johnson understandably furious<\/a>: &#8220;That game should have been called off. There&#8217;s no doubt in my mind. It was dangerous for the players who played in terms of the injuries, the U23s played yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The team was changing by the hour and I can&#8217;t help but be angry and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not 100% sure who I should be angry at because I had to control the controllable and focus on the ones who could play. I don&#8217;t think we got any help or clarity from the EFL.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><b>Next Three Games Cancelled<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Following the game against Wimbledon, it was announced via the club&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/safc.com\/news\/club-news\/2020\/december\/club-statement-covid-19-update\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official website<\/a> that their next three games had been postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The fixtures against <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/11\/27\/shrewsbury-town-confirm-steve-cotterill-appointment\/\" target=\"_self\">Shrewsbury Town<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/10\/16\/blackpool-sign-kenny-dougall-until-2022\/\" target=\"_self\">Blackpool<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/09\/24\/hull-city-sign-hakeeb-adelakun-on-loan-from-bristol-city\/\" target=\"_self\">Hull City<\/a> were postponed.<\/p>\n<p>At present, Sunderland are scheduled to return to action against Accrington Stanley on December 29.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Aiden McGeady Breaks his Silence\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>This past week, winger Aiden McGeady has spoken out about Phil Parkinson\u2019s time at the club and his banishment from the first-team squad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/safc-unfiltered\/id1515417255\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SAFC Unfiltered Podcast<\/a>, McGeady said: &#8220;To be honest, I still to this day don&#8217;t really know what happened. I never really had an argument or a falling out with Phil Parkinson, a big fight or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the Tuesday before the Gillingham game, he called me in and said, &#8216;you&#8217;re our best player, I need to get you on the ball more in the final third&#8217;. He said he was going to play me as a number ten against Gillingham.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the Thursday, he called me in again and said he was going to change it, to play with two strikers and three at the back. I said, \u2018OK\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never got off the bench during the game, we were off Sunday, trained Monday, and then on Tuesday morning, I got called to go and see him again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hadn&#8217;t even got changed into my kit yet. He literally just said, &#8216;I don&#8217;t want you round the place anymore&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I asked why, and he said &#8216;I think you&#8217;re maybe too negative for the group&#8217;. I said, &#8216;well, we&#8217;ve won two out of fifteen mate, there&#8217;s obviously a problem&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He couldn&#8217;t give me any examples of what I&#8217;d done wrong, any moments. He said he&#8217;d made his decision and that was it, really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGeady returned to the first team for Lee Johnson\u2019s first game in charge. He has since featured in three of the new head coach\u2019s first four games in charge.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Sunderland Round-Up: Takeover Latest<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/11\/13\/report-sunderland-takeover-nears-completion\/\" target=\"_self\">Sunderland takeover<\/a> saga continues to rumble on. It has now been almost one year since Stewart Donald decided to put the club up for sale. At present, the consortium led by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and current minority shareholder Juan Sartori is believed to be still the front-runners.<\/p>\n<p>Recently chief executive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/sport\/football\/sunderland-afc\/sunderland-fans-wait-positive-news-kyril-louis-dreyfus-bid-take-control-after-fresh-claims-3074465\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Jim Rodwell\u00a0gave this update<\/a> on the situation: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been in contact with the EFL and certain documentation has been lodged with the EFL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a process that you go through and some documentation has been lodged. We&#8217;re just working through it. It just takes time, it is seriously complex. There are so many moving parts to it.
