Mario Balotelli<\/a> is set to sign for Serie B club Monza, according to Italian journalist and reporter Fabrizio Romano<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rumours<\/a> linking the former Manchester City<\/a> and Liverpool<\/a> striker with Brazilian outfit Vasco da Gama are seemingly wide of the mark, with the 30-year-old instead opting to remain in his native Italy.<\/p>\n

On the face of it, Balotelli is not making the lucrative move to a new club that many had touted him to do as a free agent. Monza currently sit ninth in the Italian second division after the opening nine fixtures of the 2020\/21 season.<\/p>\n

However, this move is certainly not without its fair share of fanfare. Monza are owned by Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian Prime Minister who is also a media tycoon. Additionally, the club recently completed the signing of eccentric attacking-midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng<\/a>, who arrived on a one-year contract having left fellow Italian club Fiorentina.<\/p>\n

This means Balotelli’s latest move will be met with a series of intriguing subplots, and fans and journalists alike will watch on with interest as the Italy international seeks to revive his career in Serie B.<\/p>\n

Barnsley Links Appear to be False Dawn<\/h3>\n

Balotelli’s impending transfer to Monza appears to have poured cold water on a series of sensational reports<\/a> linking the striker with a return to English football.<\/p>\n

Last month, talk of Balotelli joining Championship<\/a> club Barnsley was flatly rejected by Micah Richards<\/a>, a former team-mate who remains good friends with the striker.<\/p>\n

Speaking as a pundit for the BBC, Richards described Balotelli as “too good”<\/a> to be playing in the second division of English football. This means the Italian will surely have no excuses for failure in Italy’s second tier.<\/p>\n

Balotelli is fast-running out of chances to turn his undisputed ability into a worthwhile investment for clubs around Europe. This move to Monza might be his last opportunity to resurrect his career.<\/p>\n
