Sky Sports<\/a> have confirmed that Gus Poyet will not be returning to Sunderland<\/a> as their new manager. Rumours gathered speed today that the Uruguayan was to begin a second spell in charge at the Stadium of Light. Bookmakers suspended betting on him be the man to replace the recently sacked Phil Parkinson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, it has now been confirmed that the former Brighton and Hove Albion<\/a> and Bordeaux boss will not be taking charge of the Black Cats<\/p>\n

Gus Poyet Will Not Be Returning to Sunderland<\/h2>\n

Second Spell Not Happening<\/h3>\n

Gus Poyet\u2019s first spell at the Stadium of Light lasted from October 2013 to March 2015. During that time, he saved the club from relegation, took the club to the League Cup Final and oversaw three consecutive victories over fierce local rivals Newcastle United<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As Wednesday wore on, it appeared increasingly likely that Poyet was ready for another spell in the Sunderland hot seat. His compatriot Juan Sartori currently owns a stake in the club and is part of a consortium attempting to buy the club<\/a> from current owner Stewart Donald.<\/p>\n

Odds were slashed and eventually bookmakers suspended betting as rumours grew. However, the odds were incorrect and Poyet will not be the next Sunderland manager.<\/p>\n

Gus Poyet Advised He Could Return<\/h3>\n

Just weeks ago Poyet was asked about whether he could return to Sunderland. He said<\/a>: \u201cCould I return? Yes, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause there are things that are still possible to change. It\u2019s a different situation, but it\u2019s something that\u2026when you\u2019ve been in a club and you\u2019ve been so close to people and then everyone watches the series \u2018Sunderland Til I Die\u2019 and the first thing they do, is they call you and ask you (about it).\u201d<\/p>\n

“You\u2019ve been there, and it confirmed things you already told them because that\u2019s what \u2018Sunderland Til I Die\u2019 does, confirms to people things I told them when I left Sunderland.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, you want to go back because it\u2019s typical South American passion, you know, the fans. So, that relationship we made with the fans, even if it didn\u2019t finish in the best way, I am still thinking that it\u2019s possible to do something important there.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s easier when you know how much it (the club) means to the fans, how important it is to the city, so yeah, of course (he would go back).\u201d<\/p>\n

The Search Continues<\/h3>\n

With Poyet now ruled out, the search for Sunderland\u2019s next manager continues.<\/p>\n

Former Huddersfield Town and Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley<\/a> has expressed an interest. Many others<\/a> are also thought to be in the running.<\/p>\n
