Eric Dier<\/a> was left unhappy with the Football Association’s process that saw him fined and banned<\/a> for four matches earlier this year. The punishment followed an incident<\/a> with fans at the conclusion of Tottenham Hotspur<\/a>‘s FA Cup<\/a> defeat on penalties to Norwich City<\/a> in March 2020.<\/p>\n

Eric Dier Expresses His Unhappiness With Football Association Process<\/h2>\n

Eric Dier\u2019s brother, Patrick, had been involved in an altercation<\/a> with a Spurs fan at the end of the defeat and word reached Dier on the pitch. Dier jumped over the advertising hoardings and a number of empty seats to go and protect his brother.<\/p>\n

The Football Association issued<\/a> Dier with a fine of \u00a340,000 and a four-match ban after deliberation of 127 days<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Eric Dier Unhappy With ‘Harsh’ Punishment<\/h3>\n

Whilst Eric Dier admits that his conduct was improper, the England<\/a> and Tottenham defender told the Daily Mirror<\/a> that he was \u2018stunned\u2019 by the severity of his punishment: \u201dIt was harsh. I have very strong views, but not just on the ban itself but the process that took place to get to that.<\/p>\n

“If you were to compare the ban and fine to other things, I think you’d find some strange outcomes.<\/p>\n

“There is a time when I will talk about it when I’m retired or not playing in England anymore.”<\/p>\n

127 days was an exceptionally long period of time for the decision to be reached and The FA were also criticised by Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n

Mourinho Offered His Understanding<\/h3>\n

In quotes cited by The Independent<\/a> in March, Jose Mourinho admitted that he felt that Dier only reacted in the way anyone would if a member of their own family was in that position: \u201cI think Eric Dier did something that we professionals cannot do but in these circumstances, every one of us would do,\u201d<\/p>\n

Mourinho continued: \u201cBecause when somebody insults you, and your family is there, and you get involved with the person that is insulting you, in this case, a younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot do.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I repeat, probably every one of us would do. I repeat, we professionals we cannot do, but I repeat I am with the player and I understand the player\u201d<\/p>\n

Dier Cannot Wait for Return of Fans<\/h3>\n

Despite the altercation and punishment handed out, all of which has now been served, Eric Dier cannot wait for fans to return<\/a>: \u201dAbuse from fans is something that is always going to exist. But I think the atmosphere in stadiums when fans get back will be incredible and it is something I catch myself thinking about and I can\u2019t wait.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
