Carlisle United<\/a> have signed former Peterborough United<\/a> defender Rhys Bennett<\/a> on a short-term deal.<\/p>\n

Bennett’s contract will expire on January 1 2021. The 29-year-old was a free agent having been released by Peterborough at the end of last season.<\/p>\n

Manager Chris Beech and Bennett have worked together before, at Rochdale where Beech was assistant manager. Beech told the club website<\/a> that Bennett’s arrival will further his side’s promotion push:<\/p>\n

“Rhys is a player I know very well and, in terms of the group, he\u2019ll definitely make us better. I worked with him at Rochdale, he\u2019s 6ft 3, predominantly a centre back but can equally play as a full back, or in midfield.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s got those good attributes you want to bring in terms of strength, power, good speed and being honest.<\/p>\n

“In terms of fitness he\u2019s at a good level already, but there\u2019s always an element of transition required.<\/p>\n

“Rhys is a quality player, he knows what it\u2019s about and what\u2019s required, he bolsters what\u2019s already a very good group. He provides us with more strength in depth and gives us additional options in both boxes, should we need it.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m looking forward to working with him again and really pleased he\u2019s here. I know he\u2019ll thrive in the sort of environment we\u2019re trying to create and, as a football club, you\u2019ve got to continue to push the boundaries if you can.”<\/p>\n

Carlisle are currently fifth in League Two after 11 games.<\/p>\n
