Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is interested in the vacant role at Sheffield Wednesday, reports Nancy Frostick of The Athletic<\/a>. This is despite reports from The Telegraph’s John Percy<\/a> suggesting that the Owls are in advanced talks with former Stoke City<\/a> and Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis.<\/p>\n

Wednesday are without a manager having parted company with Garry Monk<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

Sven-Goran Eriksson Interested in Sheffield Wednesday Job Despite Tony Pulis Talks<\/h2>\n

No Stranger to English Club Football<\/h3>\n

While Eriksson is best known in England for his spell in charge of the national team, the Swede has also managed at club level in this country.<\/p>\n

A year after leaving his international role, he took over at Manchester City<\/a> on a three-year deal in 2007, becoming the club’s first manager from outside of the UK in the process.<\/p>\n

Despite a good start, City trailed off during the campaign and, after an 8-1 hammering away at Middlesbrough in the last game of the season, they finished ninth, which was enough to see Eriksson lose his job after just one season.<\/p>\n

In 2010, he joined then-Championship strugglers Leicester City<\/a> and guided them to within touching distance of the play-offs. However, they trailed off just like City had and ended up finishing tenth.<\/p>\n

Eriksson’s last spell in England was in a director of football role at Notts County, then in League Two, following the club’s takeover by Middle East consortium Munto Finance. Having joined in July 2009, he left less than a year later, in February 2010, after the club’s large debts were uncovered.<\/p>\n

Despite Eriksson’s name being in the mix for the Sheffield Wednesday job, the club have received numerous applications for the role.<\/p>\n

Pulis the Favourite Despite Sven-Goran Eriksson Interest<\/h3>\n

It is currently believed, despite Eriksson’s interest, that Tony Pulis is the front-runner for the job.<\/p>\n

John Percy stated on Twitter earlier that the club are in advanced talks with the Welshman, but that nothing has been confirmed on either side.<\/p>\n

Pulis has been out of management since departing Middlesbrough at the end of the 2018\/19 season.<\/p>\n

Also among the candidates are former Macclesfield Town and Southend United boss Sol Campbell and current Plymouth Argyle manager and former Wednesday striker Ryan Lowe.<\/p>\n

In addition, Frostick’s report for The Athletic states that Paul Cook, last at Wigan Athletic, and former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson, would consider taking up the role if the offer came.<\/p>\n
