With Virgil van Dijk already ruled out for the season alongside the news of Fabinho’s recent injury, Liverpool cannot afford to receive another blow to the back four through injury.

Alexander-Arnold to Miss England International Duty

Chance for Reece James to Cement His Place

During the last international break, Gareth Southgate’s team selection was often the subject which took to the headlines with Jack Grealish often left out in the cold. Yet, one decision he seemed to get right was who he decided to play right-back.

Instead of the more experienced Alexander-Arnold, Southgate opted for the, in the end, livelier Reece James, who went onto impress the many on watching fans from home. The Chelsea man was England’s best player at times and, therefore, kept Alexander-Arnold out of the side.

Now, with the Liverpool fullback out of action for the international break, the Chelsea man has the opportunity to further cement his place in Gareth Southgate’s starting lineup ahead of the Euros next year.

More Bad News for Liverpool

The news of van Dijk’s season-ending injury would have undoubtedly left Liverpool gutted, and perhaps slightly panicked. Yet, you wouldn’t think it. Since the news, the Liverpool backline, for the most part, has seemed fairly assured, even in the face of further injury blows to Fabinho and Joel Matip.

It has to be said, however, that, if Alexander-Arnold’s time off the pitch is an extended one, the Reds may struggle more than ever in all thirds of the pitch. The young defender is so often the source of creativity and Liverpool will be desperate to have him back by the time the Premier League returns.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

After picking up an injury in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad, Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the England games set to take place during the international break against the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.
