Salford City have confirmed that they have appointed Richie Wellens as their new manager.<\/p>\n
The 40-year-old’s former club Swindon Town announced<\/a> that he had departed earlier on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n The 40-year-old is dropping back down to League Two just a few months after leading Swindon to promotion.<\/p>\n The Robins were promoted to League One via points-per-game after last season was curtailed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. While they finished on the same amount of points as Crewe Alexandra, their overall season record meant\u00a0 that they finished as champions.<\/p>\n However, they have struggled so far this season. An outbreak<\/a> of COVID-19 in the squad has meant that they are now playing catch up to the rest of the league, but they have won just three of their opening nine games of the season.<\/p>\n Wellens will now be tasked with steering the Ammies towards promotion from League Two. Salford currently sit in tenth place, just three points outside of the play-offs.<\/p>\n Speaking about the decision to take over at Salford, Wellens said<\/a>: “It\u2019s a Club that everybody takes great interest in because of the profile of the Club, it\u2019s a Club on the up and I\u2019m a manager that wants to win games.<\/p>\n “Coming to Salford is an opportunity to win week in, week out, and it\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for me to take the Club to where they want to be.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Club has had unbelievable success in the last six years with Bern and Jonno winning promotions and Graham Alexander getting them into the Football League, and I\u2019m looking forward to continuing that success.<\/p>\n \u201cPromotions at this level are more difficult, but the rewards are greater and I believe in continuing that success as well as giving the Club an identity and style that reflects the people of Salford.\u201d<\/p>\n Main PhotoSalford City Appoint Richie Wellens<\/h2>\n
