He made 28 appearances in his first season at the club, scoring twice.

However, his declining influence at Watford is evidenced by the stark contrast between that opening campaign and his most recent one. Last season, Janmaat only made eight top-flight appearances as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Watford confirmed the news of Janmaat’s departure as a free agent on their official website, stating that that club has “reached agreement with Daryl Janmaat for the defender to leave the club on a free transfer”.

Janmaat himself appears to have left Vicarage Road on good terms, and spoke highly of his four-year Watford career. “I had a great time at the club; it’s a club with really good people and I look back fondly on a really good time for me in my career,” stated the 31-year-old.

“Reaching the FA Cup Final in 2019 was a real highlight for me, as it was a big achievement in the club’s history. Winning the first four games of the season was also a great time for us and set us up for a good season which was very enjoyable,” added the former Feyenoord player.

Janmaat Backs Watford to Return to the Premier League

Watford succumbed to relegation on the final day of the 2019/20 season, having appeared poised to stay up at one stage before that. Upon departing the club, Janmaat spoke of his confidence that the Hornets have what it takes to recover.

“I am sure the lads will bounce back this season and I know they have the quality to get back to the Premier League. I wish everyone at the club all the best.”

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Daryl Janmaat has been released by Championship side Watford.
