We’re now into the quarter-finals of this season’s sped-up Carabao Cup. This stage of the competition normally takes place in the heart of the festive fixture congestion, but in a bid to ease that in this shortened season, the first four rounds have all been played within a few weeks.<\/p>\n
The final eight teams now know who they will be playing when the competition returns in December. Among the eight are two teams from the Championship, while the remaining six are from the Premier League.<\/p>\n
Despite not even playing in round three due to the postponement of their game<\/a> against Leyton Orient, Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> edged through to the last eight courtesy of a penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea<\/a>.<\/p>\n Erik Lamela netted late on to level the scores after Timo Werner’s first Chelsea goal had put the Blues in front.<\/p>\n In the end, it was Mason Mount who missed the decisive kick, as Hugo Lloris turned his effort around the post to win the game for Spurs.<\/p>\n After battering Morecambe in round three, Newcastle United<\/a> were rewarded with another trip to a fourth-tier side, this time in the form of Newport County.<\/p>\n The Exiles are well-known for their giant-killing exploits in the cup competitions, and they were at it again against the Magpies as Tristan Abrahams put them ahead inside five minutes.<\/p>\n It wasn’t to be this time, though, as Jonjo Shelvey’s late stunner sent the game to penalties where Steve Bruce’s side prevailed.<\/p>\n Manchester City’s<\/a> dominance in the Carabao Cup continued with a 3-0 success at Burnley<\/a>, while Manchester United<\/a> were also 3-0 winners away from home, beating Brighton & Hove Albion<\/a>.<\/p>\n Brentford and Stoke City<\/a> are the only EFL teams remaining in the competition.
