{"id":567070,"date":"2020-09-24T10:19:19","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T14:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=567070"},"modified":"2020-09-24T10:19:19","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T14:19:19","slug":"uefa-competitions-to-stick-with-five-substitutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/09\/24\/uefa-competitions-to-stick-with-five-substitutes\/","title":{"rendered":"UEFA Competitions to Stick With Five Substitutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uefa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin<\/a> has announced their competitions will allow teams to make five substitutes throughout 2020\/21.<\/p>\n<p>The law amendment was proposed by football&#8217;s world governing body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIFA<\/a> to assist clubs in managing player workload in a congested calendar created by the Coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>UEFA Competitions Stick With Five Substitutions<\/h2>\n<h3>Premier League Goes its Own Way<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hWkz3_J3VqI\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Champions League<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uketaOIlQ-w\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europa League<\/a> will continue to allow five substitutions this season, aligned with the majority of the major European leagues.<\/p>\n<p>La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga have all continued using the additional subs this season.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier League decided before the start of the new campaign they would revert back to three available changes.<\/p>\n<h3>English Clubs&#8217; Disadvantage<\/h3>\n<p>The rule change sees the English top-flight fall out of line with the major competitors for silverware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1epwdswu\" data-id=\"_jq97cnldq\">Premier League clubs <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/manchester-city\/\" target=\"_self\">Manchester City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/liverpool\/\" target=\"_self\">Liverpool<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/chelsea\/\" target=\"_self\">Chelsea<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/manchester-united\/\" target=\"_self\">Manchester United<\/a> will compete in this year&#8217;s Champions League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1epwdswu\" data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/arsenal\/\" target=\"_self\">Arsenal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/leicester-city\/\" target=\"_self\">Leicester City<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/clubs\/tottenham\/\" target=\"_self\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> will compete in this season&#8217;s Europa League campaign that has already seen Spurs play multiple fixtures.<\/p>\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">The league failed to get a majority vote to remain with five available substitutes with many clubs outside the top six citing a disadvantage.<\/p>\n<h3 data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">UEFA Statement<\/h3>\n<p>President Ceferin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uefa.com\/insideuefa\/about-uefa\/executive-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>: \u201cAfter representations from clubs and national associations the executive committee approved the use of five substitutions in club and international matches for the rest of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UEFA general secretary Jonas Baer-Hoffmann later added: \u201cWe will continue to push for further innovative ways to reduce their mounting workload and protect their health and performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">UEFA Decisions<\/h3>\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">The organisation&#8217;s executive committee also approved triple-header international breaks in March and September next year.<\/p>\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">The decision to move the 2021 UEFA Congress to Switzerland in March next year, rather than the Belarusian capital Minsk.<\/p>\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\">Main Photo<\/p>\n<p data-id=\"_dha7w6u73\"><a id=\"GAHdiIRrQjpm5y6wPQ8haA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7;
