Recently promoted Leeds United continued their impressive start to the season by beating Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, who prop up the table with no points. Even more worryingly, the Blades are yet to find the net this campaign.

There were also wins for Southampton, West Ham United and Aston Villa who beat Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham respectively. Tottenham Hotspur were denied all three points after referee Peter Bankes awarded a dubious injury-time penalty to Newcastle United. Spurs man Eric Dier was adjudged to have handled in the area, resulting in Callum Wilson snatching a point from the penalty spot late on.

Premier League Team of the Week

Gameweek Three

With that being said, let’s take a look at who makes this week’s Team of the Week:

GK: Karl Darlow (Newcastle United)

The Magpies shot-stopper made a whopping 11 saves in his side’s 1-1 draw against Spurs – the highest total in a Premier League game since 2013 (Tim Krul – 14) – including an incredible double save early on.

RB: Timothy Castagne (Leicester City)

Castagne came in to fill the void left by Ben Chilwell, who departed for Chelsea this summer. However, the Belgian has started his Foxes career at right-back, filling in for the injured Ricardo Pereira. The former Atalanta man continued his impressive form with an assist in Leicester’s 5-2 win over Manchester City.

CB: Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa)

The Englishman celebrated putting pen to paper on a four-year contract extension last week with Villa’s third goal in an impressive 3-0 away win against Fulham. It was Villa’s first Premier League clean sheet away from home since 2016.

CB: Jan Bednarek (Southampton)

Centre-back was a difficult choice this week. However, Southampton’s Polish defender Jan Bednarek gets the nod. The Saints claimed their first points of the season against Burnley at Turf Moor, winning 1-0, with Bednarek making an impressive 13 clearances.

LB: Arthur Masuaku (West Ham United)

Masuaku was a constant threat in his side’s 4-0 win over Wolves, teeing up Sebastien Haller with a wonderful cross from the left-hand side for the Hammers’ fourth goal.

CM: Declan Rice (West Ham United)

The Hammers will be hoping next Monday’s 5th October transfer deadline day goes by without a hiccup as Chelsea are rumoured to be in for Declan Rice. The Englishman quietly went about his business, putting in a dominant display in his side’s victory over Wolves on Saturday.

CM: Youri Tielemans (Leicester City)

The signing of Youri Tielemans from Monaco last year was seen a huge coup for Leicester, and his performance against Manchester City at the weekend solidified those opinions. The Belgian midfielder scored the fifth from the penalty spot in his side’s 5-2 victory over Guardiola’s men.

CM: John McGinn (Aston Villa)

The Scotsman looked back to his best following last season’s lengthy injury, providing two assists in Villa’s 3-0 win against Fulham.

RW: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)

The former Hull City man bagged twice in West Ham’s 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

ST: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

The easiest selection in this week’s team of the week. Vardy netted a hat-trick in the Foxes’ impressive 5-2 victory over Manchester City, becoming the only player to have scored two hat-tricks against a Pep Guardiola side. Lionel Messi (1) is the only other player on that illustrious list.

LW: Callum Robinson (West Bromwich Albion)

The Irishman scored his first goals of the season as his brace helped the Baggies earn their first point of the season in the 3-3 draw against Chelsea, despite being 3-0 to the good at half-time.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

While we might not have seen as many goals as last weekend’s record-breaking tally (44) in the Premier League, we certainly weren’t bereft of controversial talking points in game-week three.
