Chelsea<\/a> full-back Davide Zappacosta<\/a> will move to Serie club Genoa on loan this season, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at AS Roma<\/a>. It appears that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard<\/a> wants to offload the Italian international to Serie A against this season.<\/p>\n

Chelsea Defender Davide Zappacosta to Join Genoa on Loan<\/h2>\n

Another Loan for Zappacosta<\/h3>\n

Although Di Marzio announced the agreement between Chelsea and Genoa is close<\/a> yesterday, no further details have been revealed about the transfer.<\/p>\n

Zappacosta’s current contract with Chelsea expires in 2022. Therefore, a loan with an option to buy<\/a> the 28-year old could be likely for Genoa.<\/p>\n

Zappacosta was loaned to another Serie A side, AS Roma, last season. However, the Italian international struggled with multiple injuries throughout the season and made just nine appearances in Serie A.<\/p>\n

The full-back began his Chelsea career brightly after the Blues signed Zappacosta for \u00a322.5 million in 2017. He made 35 appearances in the 2017\/18 season under Antonio Conte,<\/a> but he does not appear to be in Frank Lampard’s future plans at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

Tough Competition at Chelsea<\/h3>\n

Zappacosta would be very unlikely to displace current Chelsea right-back’s Reece James<\/a> and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta<\/a>.<\/p>\n

James was a breakthrough success last season. The 20-year old made 37 appearances overall in is his first senior season at Stamford Bridge. He also started the 2020\/21 season brightly on Monday, scoring a long-range effort in the 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although Zappacosta is versatile and can play at both left and right-back, there is also stiff competition at left-back. New signing Ben Chilwell<\/a> will get the opportunity to prove himself in the coming weeks. Whereas veteran defender Marcos Alonso<\/a> and Zappacosta’s compatriot, Emerson, will most likely play back-up to Chilwell throughout the season. As a result, a move for the Italian makes sense.<\/p>\n
