The Portuguese currently has four in his squad, although Danny Rose looks to be departing.

However, when Reguilon was made available by Real Madrid, Tottenham decided to make a move for the 23-year-old.

The Spanish international was linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this window. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils were refusing to accept Madrid’s demand of a buy-back clause being inserted in his contract.

While talks stalled but remained ongoing between United and Madrid, Mourinho’s Tottenham swooped in to complete a swift deal for the 23-year-old.

Reguilon has made just 22 appearances during his time with the La Liga giants. He broke into the first-team during the 2018/19, but could not hold down a regular starting berth.

As a result, he was loaned out to Sevilla last season, where his impressive performances saw his stock quickly rise. The 23-year-old made 38 appearances in all competitions for Sevilla last season, as he helped them romp to yet another Europa League title.

An Excellent Signing for Spurs

Real Madrid inserting a buy-back clause into his deal shows just how highly they rate the 23-year-old. As a result, it could prove to be shrewd business by Tottenham.

Reguilon is excellent at both ends of the pitch. While he averaged just under two tackles per games last season, he also made 1.6 dribbles per game. His attacking capabilities saw him end the season with five assists, more than current first-choice Ben Davies.

As a result, Reguilon is likely to become first-choice left-back under Jose Mourinho. The Tottenham boss is looking to make the squad is own, and adding Reguilon to his line-up is an excellent starting point.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of left-back Sergio Reguilon, with the 23-year-old agreeing a long-term deal with the North London club.
