Wigan Athletic<\/a> have confirmed that they have appointed John Sheridan as manager on a short-term deal.<\/p>\n

The 55-year-old has taken over at the DW Stadium despite the Latics’ ongoing troubles.<\/p>\n

Managerial Experience<\/h3>\n

Sheridan’s managerial experience could prove vital to the Latics as they navigate troubled times.<\/p>\n

Wigan remain in administration as they embark on the new season. A short statement from administrator Gerald Krasner on the club website this morning confirmed that they would start the season in administration.<\/p>\n

As a result, the 55-year-old takes over under difficult circumstances. Wigan have sold several players this summer in a bid to raise vital funds. Sam Morsy was the most recent departure from the DW Stadium – the midfielder has joined Middlesbrough on a three-year deal.<\/p>\n

Sheridan has more than 650 games as a manager under his belt. The 55-year-old has spent much of that time in the EFL with various clubs, including Oldham Atheltic and Fleetwood Town.<\/p>\n

Most recently, the 55-year-old was in charge of Irish side Waterford, where he won three of his eight games in charge.<\/p>\n

Speaking about his appointment to the official Wigan Athletic website<\/a>, Sheridan said: “I am really pleased to be given the opportunity to work with Leam and the rest of the coaching staff to try and provide some stability for the players in what is a challenging time for the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, regardless of the situation, this is a good chance to come and manage a good football club that \u2013 despite some well-documented departures \u2013 still has some very good players at the level.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am looking forward to getting going and can assure the club\u2019s supporters that I will give my all to try and help the team in this period.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wigan face Ipswich Town in their opening game of the season on Sunday.<\/p>\n
