Tottenham Hotspur<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are interested in signing\u00a0<\/span>Wolverhampton Wanderers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0defender and Republic of Ireland international Matt Doherty<\/a>, according to\u00a0<\/span>Sky Sports<\/span><\/a>. The club is yet to make a bid for the 28-year-old defender, who’s\u00a0<\/span>market value<\/span><\/a> sits at \u20ac16 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in this transfer window,\u00a0<\/span>Spurs sold 23-year-old right-back <\/span><\/a>Kyle Walker<\/a>–Peters<\/a> to Southampton<\/a>. The English defender had spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mary’s before signing a permanent five year deal with the club.<\/span><\/p>\n

This leaves Jose Mourinho with one real option on the right side of the defence, which is Serge Aurier<\/a>. The Ivory Coast international joined from Paris Saint-Germain<\/a> for \u00a323 million three years ago and has two years left on his contract. The defender played well under Mourinho, but <\/span>reports<\/span><\/a>\u00a0suggest he could be allowed to leave for the right price.<\/span><\/p>\n

AC Milan<\/a> and Bayer Leverkusen are said to be\u00a0<\/span>interested<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the 27-year-old. Spurs are now looking at Doherty as a replacement for the Ivorian should he depart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Matt Doherty is a Mourinho Style Player<\/span><\/h3>\n

Doherty is the type of player Jose Mourinho likes in defence. He’s strong and tall, standing at 6’1″, and very versatile. Although he would get a lot of game time at right fullback, his ability to play in other positions is an asset to the Spurs manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

This season, the Republic of Ireland international played 36\u00a0<\/span>Premier League<\/span><\/a>\u00a0games for Wolves, mostly at right-wing-back. In his 2840 minutes on the pitch, Doherty assisted four goals and scored four himself. The defender also has European experience, playing ten Europa League games for his current club, where they reached the quarter-finals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jose Mourinho needs a quality right-back to improve his squad. Being second to only Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/a> in chances created over the past two seasons by right-backs, it’s clear why Spurs are interested. At 28-years-old, Doherty can be a good short-term option for the club.<\/span><\/p>\n
