Manchester United<\/a> captain Harry Maguire<\/a> will now not be included in Gareth Soutgate\u2019s England squad, despite being named in the initial team just hours ago. This comes due to developments in his criminal trial in Greece.<\/p>\n

Gareth Southgate Removes Harry Maguire From England Squad<\/h2>\n

Talking Point Going Into Announcement<\/h3>\n

Whether or not Maguire would be included in the England squad was a talking point going into its announcement. Although he is one of England\u2019s best centre-backs\u2014and the world\u2019s most expensive defender\u2014he has recently been involved<\/a> in a trial on the Greek island of Syros.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, it was revealed<\/a> that Maguire would, in fact, be a part of the England squad for the upcoming fixtures. This sparked much controversy due to the crimes of which the United man was accused. At this point in time there was no verdict from his trial.<\/p>\n

Court Makes a Decision<\/h3>\n

However, just hours after the announcement, the 27-year-old was found guilty<\/a> of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult, and sentenced to 21 months and 10 days of suspended jail time.<\/p>\n

This then provided Southgate with a decision to make, and the England manager promptly confirmed that the former Leicester City<\/a> defender would no longer be a part of England\u2019s squad for their imminent matches against Denmark and Iceland.<\/p>\n

Southgate\u2019s Statement Regarding the Harry Maguire Situation<\/h3>\n

\u201cIn light of this evening\u2019s developments, I can confirm I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said earlier today, I reserved the right to review the situation. Having spoken to Manchester United and the player, I have made this decision in the best interests of all parties and with consideration of the impact on our preparations for next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maguire has been an important part of the England side for some time, but his future with the team is now unclear.<\/p>\n
