Sunderland<\/a> have made their fourth signing of the summer today. Goalkeeper Remi Matthews has signed a one-year deal, having left Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer.<\/p>\n

The shot-stopper follows Morgan Feeney<\/a> to Wearside today, with the former Everton<\/a> centre-back signing a short-term deal with the Black Cats, ending a 13-year stay on Merseyside. Both players were announced to fans via the club’s official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this summer, Sunderland<\/a> lost Scottish goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin<\/a> to Rangers, <\/a>with a replacement made a priority. Phil Parkinson’s search ended today with the signing of 26-year-old shot-stopper Remi Matthews. The former Bolton<\/a> keeper signed a one-year deal and will compete with Lee Burge for the number one position.<\/p>\n

Upon completion of the deal, Matthews said<\/a>: \u201cEverybody knows how big this club is and I\u2019ve worked with the manager and the backroom staff before, so nobody had to sell it to me \u2013 it was a no-brainer. I\u2019m delighted to get the deal over the line and I\u2019m excited to get going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phil Parkinson Delighted to Have Signed a Goalkeeper<\/h3>\n

Manager Phil Parkinson<\/a> was delighted to have finally signed a ‘keeper, following weeks of work and the added complications that the new salary cap has brought.<\/p>\n

Parkinson said<\/a> of his new player: \u201cThis is a big signing for us because we have been trying to sign a goalkeeper and that process became very complicated due to the salary cap situation. Remi is a player with good experience but at 26, he\u2019s at a good age with plenty of improvement in him as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Experienced and Well Known to Phil Parkinson<\/h3>\n

In Matthews, Sunderland<\/a> have signed a goalkeeper with experience, especially in the Football League. He has experience of playing in the Championship, as well as playing more than 70 games in League One.<\/p>\n

The move also reunites Matthews with manager Phil Parkinson. It was Parkinson who signed the goalkeeper for Bolton, initially on loan before making the move permanent. Matthews came through the ranks at Norwich City<\/a> before having spells with\u00a0Burton Albion<\/a>, Doncaster Rovers<\/a>, Plymouth Argyle<\/a>, in Scotland<\/a> with Hamilton Academical, before his time at Bolton.<\/p>\n

Matthews follows Morgan Feeney, Bailey Wright<\/a> and Aiden O’Brien<\/a> to the Stadium of Light as manager Phil Parkinson strengthens his squad ahead of the new season.<\/p>\n
