Newcastle United<\/a> are set to secure the signature of Matty Longstaff<\/a> to a new contract, as reported by both The Times<\/a>‘ Martin Hardy and Sky Sports<\/a>‘ Keith Downie.<\/p>\n

Longstaff has been offered a significant improvement on his previous \u00a3800-a-week contract.<\/p>\n

Exit Looked Likely<\/h3>\n

The 20-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park after his contract was allowed to expire.<\/p>\n

He has been free to talk to foreign clubs since January.<\/p>\n

It had looked likely that Longstaff was going to leave Newcastle, however, the Tyneside club had not given up and appear to have been rewarded for their efforts.<\/p>\n

Udinese were the favourites to sign him, in a deal that would have seen Newcastle receive \u00a3400,000 in compensation.<\/p>\n

Leeds United<\/a>, who will play Premier League<\/a> football for the first time since 2004, were also interested in acquiring Longstaff.<\/p>\n

Brighton and Hove Albion<\/a> had also made an approach.<\/p>\n

Impact So Far<\/h3>\n

Matty is the younger brother of Sean Longstaff<\/a>, who also plays in the Newcastle United first-team.<\/p>\n

He made an instant impact for the club, scoring the winning goal against Manchester United<\/a> on his Premier League debut.<\/p>\n

Longstaff has scored three goals in his 15 appearances for the club so far. Two of the three goals came against Manchester United, though losing the other game 4-1.<\/p>\n

He has featured just twice since February.<\/p>\n

Future of Newcastle Midfield<\/h3>\n

Longstaff is also an international prospect now, having made his England<\/a> U20 debut in November.<\/p>\n

He will have one eye on making the England national team, and remaining in the Premier League will probably help that cause.<\/p>\n

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, who fought hard to keep Longstaff, sees him, and brother Sean, as the future of the club’s midfield.<\/p>\n

Hendrick Arrival<\/h3>\n

The Times’ report<\/a> adds that Newcastle are close to signing former Burnley<\/a> and Derby County<\/a> midfielder Jeff Hendrick<\/a>. Hendrick, 28, is a free agent and is to sign a three-year contract with the club, having completed a medical yesterday.<\/p>\n
