French Ligue 1 club Lille<\/a> have signed striker Jonathan David<\/a> from Belgian side Gent.<\/p>\n

The Canada international joins the French side on a five-year deal, despite reported<\/a> interest from several other outfits, including Arsenal<\/a> and Leeds United. It is believed the fee is a new club-record at 30 million Euros (\u00a327m).<\/p>\n

David’s Fine Form Gets His Move<\/h3>\n

The 20-year-old earned his move after two seasons in Belgium, where last season he scored 18 league goals and provided eight assists in just 27 appearances. The striker’s form has been equally impressive at the international level, where he has scored 11 goals in 12 games for Canada.<\/p>\n

David leaves Gent with a perfect one goal every two matches ratio across all competitions since arriving from his native Canada, where he played for Ottawa Internationals. It is form he will hope will continue with his new club.<\/p>\n

Speaking about his move David spoke to the club’s official website<\/a> “I\u2019m really happy. I\u2019ve been eagerly awaiting this day and it\u2019s a pleasure to be a Dogue,” he said. “I know the project that has been put in place here by the president, Luis Campos, and Christophe Galtier,”<\/p>\n

“This is a very good team with great players. I want to play and to progress and I think that this is the perfect place. I\u2019m a player who knows his place on the pitch. I love to play to my qualities, notably with speed and technique. I\u2019m also eager to see our fans! Let\u2019s go LOSC!”<\/p>\n

At just 20 years old there is still plenty to come from the young Canadian prodigy, and he will no doubt be eager to get started and impress his new club both in Ligue 1 and in the Europa League.<\/p>\n

Along with Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies<\/a>, there certainly seems a bright future for the Canadian national side, should their talents be nurtured successfully.<\/p>\n
