Middlesbrough remain keen on making a move for Northampton Town<\/a> captain Charlie Goode. The Teesside club have made a second, improved offer for the centre-back, according to Sky Sports News.<\/a><\/p>\n

Priority Signing<\/h3>\n

Middlesbrough have made the signing of Goode a priority this summer – having already had an initial bid of \u00a3500,000 rejected by the League One club.<\/a><\/p>\n

Northampton Town are yet to comment on the supposed second bid. However, manager Keith Curle has previously said the club doesn’t need to cash in on the player.<\/p>\n

“We haven’t got to sell Charlie, we don’t want to sell Charlie and we don’t need to sell Charlie and that’s a fantastic position for us as a football club to be in because we want to bring good players to the club that are value for money – on and off the pitch,” Curle said regarding<\/a> Goode’s future.<\/p>\n

How Good Is Goode?<\/h3>\n

Goode’s pedigree is clear – and at the age of 25, the Watford-born man is moving into the peak of his career.<\/p>\n

Last season he played 39 matches in the league and was a key player in the Cobblers’ promotion to League One.<\/p>\n

Standing at 6″4, his height and presence will be invaluable to Neil Warnock’s side, who conceded 61 goals last season. Centre-back is an area that Warnock has identified as a weak link in the side.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re looking for a type of player, if you want a defender, you want a defender,” Warnock said recently.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any rocket science if I\u2019m honest. I think we\u2019ve got a lot of forward-looking defenders, but not many defending defenders. The club\u2019s got to have some defenders for next season, there has to be a priority in those positions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boro fans will be hopeful of a move being completed despite numerous other Championship clubs rumoured to be interested in Goode. Ronnie Jepson, who is on Warnock’s coaching staff, was previously at Northampton Town. This could give Boro the edge in getting the transfer over the line.<\/p>\n
