Carlisle United<\/a> have added another former Manchester United<\/a> player to their ranks in Blackpool-born Joe Riley<\/a>, the club have confirmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Riley, 23, joins<\/a> former Red, George Tanner<\/a>, at the League Two<\/a> side.<\/p>\n

The versatile defender arrives on a one-year contract, with an optional extension.<\/p>\n

Joe Riley Becomes Carlisle United’s Fifth Signing of the Summer<\/h2>\n

First Team Experience at Manchester United<\/h3>\n

Riley featured twice for Manchester United, making his debut from the bench, replacing Cameron Borthwick-Jackson<\/a>, who has joined<\/a> Oldham Athletic<\/a>, in a 3-0 FA Cup<\/a> win over Shrewsbury Town<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just days later, he made his first start for the most successful club in Premier League<\/a> history. He started in the 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland in the Europa League<\/a>, made famous by the breakthrough of Marcus Rashford<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That was his second and final appearance for the Red Devils.<\/p>\n

Injury Struggles<\/h3>\n

Riley had a loan spell at Sheffield United<\/a> in 2017, where he struggled with injuries.<\/p>\n

He joined Bradford City<\/a> in 2018 and only managed to make eight appearances in his two-years there, suffering another injury.<\/p>\n

His contract at the West Yorkshire based club recently expired and he has made the move to Carlisle. He will hope to stay injury-free and finally get a strong season under his belt at the club.<\/p>\n

Fits the Mould<\/h3>\n

“He’s worked his socks off on his fitness and is now more motivated, hungry, and determined than ever. He really wants to make his mark in the game,” his new boss Chris Beech told the club website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I also saw characteristics I’ve spoken about many times that I’m looking for in players we recruit in Joe. Technically he’s outstanding – his touch, movement, ball control, range of passing, and technical skills are definitely up there.”<\/p>\n

Versatility Provides Options<\/h3>\n

Beech will be looking to use Riley’s versatility.<\/p>\n

“He came through at Manchester United as a right-back, but he’s got great feet so he’s equally at home playing left-back. As a younger player, he played in midfield. His energy levels and change of pace are a joy to watch, so I can see why that was the case,” Beech added.<\/p>\n

“Carlisle will provide Joe with the perfect platform to kick on and fulfil that potential.<\/p>\n

“He’s another we will support and make better in terms of footballing experience. At 23, he’s the right age, in the right place, at the right time.”<\/p>\n

Didn’t Take Much Convincing<\/h3>\n

“The gaffer didn’t have to say too much to convince me to come here really,” Riley told the club website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I spoke to him during the off-season and lockdown and he told me that the lads are really looking to push on this season and be competitive in the league.<\/p>\n

“Being a competitive player myself and hearing that from the gaffer meant it was something I was excited to buy in to.”<\/p>\n
