Although that seems like a given year after year, the battles for European spots in the league were fierce. It was a year full of excitement, as Serie A saw the most goals (1,154) out of the top five European leagues. However, who makes the Serie A team of the season.

Serie A Team of the Season

Defence

The goalkeeper spot belongs to Wojciech Szczęsny. The Juventus man split some time with Gianluigi Buffon, but was immensely important in the Bianconeri‘s title campaign. He saved over 74 percent of shots that came his way.

The centre-back’s are Matthijs de Ligt and Francesco Acerbi. De Ligt stands out amongst a crop of star defenders at Juventus. His debut season indicated that he’s going to be a star for at least the next decade.

Acerbi, on the other hand, was vital to Lazio’s return to Champions League. He also had Lazio as a legitimate threat to win the league prior to their relatively poor form during the restart.

The full-back positions belong to Robin Gosens and Juan Cuadrado. Gosens is a major reason why Atalanta finished third and are still making a run in the Champions League. His input of nine goals and eight assists was a spectacular contribution for a player in his position.

Cuadrado remains a consistent footballer. Although very versatile, he spent much of this season at right-back for Juventus, contributing to seven goals.

Midfield

The midfield three consists of Sergej Milinković-Savić, Luis Alberto and Ismael Bennacer.

Milinković-Savić continues to make a case as one of the top midfielders in football. The Serbian is dominant on the ball, and the engine that kept Lazio running. His size and technical ability allow him to dominate a game with relative ease.

Alberto, also from Lazio, is a major contributor to I Biancocelesti‘s potent attack. Scoring six goals from the midfield is impressive, but providing 15 assists made Alberto the league’s second-leading assist-man.

Bennacer’s contributions do not jump off the statistical sheets like Alberto’s. Like Milinković-Savić, Bennacer is key to AC Milan‘s play. How he plays typical dictates how the Rossoneri play. Although Milan struggled out of the gates, Bennacer was world-class during the league’s restart.

Attack

The forward trident had a direct impact on 104 goals this season. That’s over nine percent of all goals scored in the league this season.

The trio features Papú Gomez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ciro Immobile.

Gomez is the leader of Atalanta’s high-octane attack. When he wasn’t scoring goals – seven in the league – he was busy creating 16 goals for his team. That places him fifth in total assists in Europe’s top five leagues.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, continued to do what he does best – score goals and win games. This season he finished with 31 goals and five assists. A portion of his goals did in fact come from the penalty spot, but there’s a reason teams trust him to take those shots. The Portuguese remains one of the most lethal goal scorers in football.

Immobile is the winner of Europe’s golden boot. His 36 goal campaign shattered records in Serie A. The Italian once again made a name for himself as one of the top strikers in the game. He isn’t solely a scorer, however. Immobile also finished with nine assists, a major reason why Lazio was such a threat going forward.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

The Serie A campaign has ended with Juventus winning their ninth consecutive Scudetto.
