Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> defender Juan Foyth<\/a> has vowed to fight to earn a place in the Spurs backline. The Argentine has failed to nail down a starting spot since joining the club in the summer of 2017, with a host of clubs interested in signing the defender.<\/p>\n

Fighting For Position<\/h3>\n

Despite making a promising start to his Spurs career, Foyth has struggled to make a breakthrough in cementing a starting spot down. However, knee and ankle injuries<\/a> stunted any form of development or consistency this season. The 22-year-old was limited to just four appearances in the Premier League<\/a> this season, with three of those coming from the bench.<\/p>\n

With Foyth seemingly down the Spurs pecking order as a result, a number of clubs have taken an interest in making a move for the Argentine. It is said that compatriot Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly interested<\/a> in bringing the defender to Championship<\/a> winners Leeds United ahead of their Premier League return.<\/p>\n

But despite the uncertainty regarding his future, Foyth is looking ahead for his current challenge in north London and particularly hails the impact of boss Jose Mourinho.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Argentine sports show Libero<\/em> <\/a>(via football.london<\/a>), he said: \u201cIf I have the chance to compete for a spot, I would like to stay at Spurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMourinho is very close to the players. Even though I didn\u2019t play much, I think he\u2019s a great coach and person. He wants to win at all costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Future in North London<\/h3>\n

Spurs\u2019 troublesome season has seen plenty of fingers pointed toward the team\u2019s defensive woes. Multiple defensive combinations and pairings had been utilised throughout the season, with inconsistency appearing as an unsurprising outcome.<\/p>\n

Toby Alderweireld<\/a> partnered with Davinson Sanchez<\/a> emerged as a solid partnership toward the end of the season. Meanwhile, a versatile Eric Dier<\/a> would start in all games when available since the restart. Foyth\u2019s injury-riddled season saw him only make the bench in the win against Leicester City<\/a>; also missing out on Spurs\u2019 final-day draw at Crystal Palace<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the young defender may have a potential lifeline at Spurs. The departure of veteran defender Jan Vertonghen<\/a> has opened up an additional spot in the backline. Tottenham\u2019s qualification for Europa League football next season alongside domestic competitions will furthermore see the squad stretched to its limits. Foyth can remain to be a useful asset, where he can come in when injuries and rotation concerns become threatening.<\/p>\n
