Colchester United<\/a> have appointed Steve Ball as their new head coach. Ball steps up from his previous role as assistant manager.<\/p>\n

He replaces John McGreal, who was sacked<\/a> following Colchester\u2019s defeat in the play-off semi-finals to Exeter City.<\/p>\n

Ball Replaces His Long Time Friend and Colleague John McGreal<\/h3>\n

Colchester announced via their website<\/a> they had appointed Steve Ball as their new manager. Ball replaces John McGreal and steps from his role as assistant manager which he held for four years.<\/p>\n

Ball is no stranger to the club having played for the club during his playing days. He made 75 appearances across two spells for the U\u2019s before joining the club\u2019s coaching team.<\/p>\n

Ball combined a coaching role at Colchester while managing non-league Leiston. He began working for Colchester\u2019s U23s as McGreal\u2019s assistant before they were promoted to the first team. Ball has also managed Maldon & Tiptree so he is no stranger to managing a football club.<\/p>\n

Chairman Robbie Cowling Declares Ball Was the Natural Choice<\/h3>\n

Speaking to the Colchester website about Ball\u2019s appointment, chairman Robbie Cowling said<\/a>: \u201cSteve was a natural choice for Colchester United to make because as well as being an excellent coach, he knows the club inside out having started as an Academy coach.<\/p>\n

“He also understands the demands of the first team, having been John McGreal\u2019s assistant for the last four seasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve is taking the reins as first-team coach at a pivotal time for the club. The financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic has forced Colchester United into releasing a number of senior players that I\u2019m sure Steve would have liked us to have kept.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve is likely to have to deal with issues that no First Team Coach or Manager before him has had to endure.<\/p>\n

“However, our club is not alone and I trust that everyone is appreciative of our situation and will give Steve their full support.\u201d<\/p>\n
