Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson<\/a> has been named the 2019\/20 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers\u2019 Association, after leading his side to the Premier League title<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just two days after becoming the first captain to lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield for three decades, Henderson can now add this prestigious individual award to a mounting collection.<\/p>\n

Raking in the Awards<\/h3>\n

The accolade caps of a remarkable 13 months for himself and the football club, having led his side to Champions League, FIFA World Club Cup and now Premier League success.<\/p>\n

The midfielder was confirmed as the recipient of the annual prize this morning, voted on by professional football writers and broadcasters across the country.<\/p>\n

Henderson, 30, received more than a quarter of the votes from the FWA, beating the likes Manchester City<\/a> midfielder Kevin De Bruyne<\/a> and Manchester United<\/a> striker Marcus Rashford<\/a> to claim the prize, as well as Reds teammates Sadio Mane<\/a> and Virgil van Dijk<\/a>, who were both in contention.<\/p>\n

Since his arrival at Liverpool from Sunderland<\/a> in 2011, Henderson hasn’t always been a fan favourite with the club. However, since becoming captain, his leadership qualities and his performances have made him a firm favourite with all associated.<\/p>\n

The Reds captain has been an inspiration in Liverpool’s rise to prominence once more. When fit, an ever-present tenacious presence in the centre of J\u00fcrgen Klopp\u2019s team, the catalyst for the way the German manager likes his teams to play.<\/p>\n

To add to his undoubted work ethic<\/a>, the newly crowned 2019\/20 Footballer of the Year has managed four goals and five assists in the league this campaign.<\/p>\n

A Brilliant Year for Henderson<\/h3>\n

On the award, Henderson said: \u201cI\u2019d like to say how appreciative I am of the support of those who voted for me and the Football Writers\u2019 Association in general. You only have to look at the past winners of it, a number of whom I\u2019ve been blessed to play with here at Liverpool, like Stevie (Gerrard), Luis (Suarez) and Mo (Salah) to know how prestigious it is.”<\/p>\n

The England international has missed just four league matches, prior to a season-ending knee injury<\/a> he picked up a fortnight ago against Brighton & Hove Albion<\/a>. Despite missing the match through injury, the Reds captain took to the stage on Wednesday night after his teams 5-3 win at home to Chelsea<\/a>, to lift the Premier League trophy and begin the title celebrations.<\/p>\n

It’s not just on the field where Henderson has been leading from the front this season, he was one of the leading figures in the #PlayersTogether initiative, to help raise money for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n
