Nine people were arrested by police<\/a> on Wednesday as thousands of Liverpool<\/a>\u00a0fans gathered outside Anfield after their 5-3 victory at home to Chelsea<\/a>.<\/p>\n

About 3,000 Liverpool fans trouped out to the stadium grounds as they celebrated lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time, and their first top-flight title in 30 years.<\/p>\n

Defiance<\/h3>\n

Instructions were laid down by Merseyside Police Department, Liverpool City Council, Spirit of Shankly supporters group and the club itself, urging fans to celebrate at home.<\/p>\n

The order was made to reduce risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus and prevent a repeat of the crowd gathering by Liverpool supporters after the Reds were confirmed Premier League winners last month.<\/p>\n

However, thousands of fans were seen celebrating on the streets of Anfield, throwing fireworks and flares, and singing with the club’s flag.<\/p>\n

A total of nine<\/span> arrests were made by the police on suspicion of violence, being drunk and disorderly, drink and drug driving and assault.<\/p>\n

Police Statement<\/h3>\n

In an official statement, the Merseyside Police expressed disappointment at the situation but thanked\u00a0the majority of<\/span>\u00a0fans that adhered to their instructions.<\/p>\n

Assistant Chief Constable Natalie\u00a0Perischine<\/span>, from\u00a0Merseyside Police, said<\/a>: \u201cWe put a comprehensive and appropriate policing operation in place ahead of the game, with the safety of the public paramount in our decision making. I want to thank all those fans who\u00a0heeded<\/span>\u00a0advice to stay home and watch the celebrations on TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers made\u00a0a total of\u00a0<\/span>nine arrests outside Anfield last night for affray, assault, people who were drunk and disorderly and drug driving.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of the crowd were good-natured\u00a0and had dispersed by 2am. Thankfully we didn\u2019t see the\u00a0sort of\u00a0<\/span>incidents of disorder and criminal damage we saw at the Pier Head on 27 June, the investigation into which has seen\u00a0more than<\/span> 20 arrests made to date.\u201d<\/p>\n
